Of all the B&B's I've stayed in, this was my favourite - firstly, it was the most homely, with very nicely decorated rooms and friendly staff. Second the breakfast was good and third there was nothing to fault

Stayed at this hotel for one night and would definitely go back again, the next time for longer. Fabulous room, clean and spacious with a huge bathroom. The teddy bear on the bed was a lovely touch. Considering we were in the middle of a city it was so tranquil. No traffic noise whatsoever. The main pub/restaurant has a few rooms above it but we stayed in the St Georges annex just across the road (only about 10 steps across the narrow road!!). Please bear in mind the building is extremely old so there is quite a bit of noise from creeking floorboards and you can hear other guests talking and flushing the loo etc but a lot quieter than a lot of other hotels I've stayed in with banging doors all night. We had a meal in the restaurant and it was absolutely delicious. The wine list is vast and the food all cooked to order to a very high standard. Its very very popular so you must book in advance. The breakfast was one of the best hotel breakfasts I've had and once again freshly cooked.
You do pay a little over the odds for the food but it really was worth it. All in all, we had a lovely stay and highly recommend it. A superb location if you want to be in the centre of Winchester if you're a tourist.

We are all entitled to our opinion, but I am amazed at some of the negative reviews of the Wykeham. It is a true pub for starters - an area for drinkers, and an area for diners, with very little overlapping. Unlike some "pubs" who more or less insist that you dine there.

We also like the bedrooms, breakfast room and above all the decor downstairs - unique! Former owner Graeme Jameson (now sadly no longer with us) was a visionary.

Yes it is expensive, but ever since we began staying there for mini breaks ten years ago, I have never found cause to grumble. The food is excellent, they don't allow the dreaded mobiles, and it's rare to hear swearing

Stayed here a while ago, heard it was now under (new) management. The garden in the back has been turned into a car park with a narrow bricked patio edge. How anyone can eat out there is astonishing. Food is good for a pub, but not to restaurant standard despite the price. Definitely less customers so people seem to be voting with their feet!

Looked on web for somewhere to have a birthday lunch and saw that the Wykeham Arms was "family friendly". What a joke!! The barmaid watched us collapse a double buggy, remove two young children from it, take all our coats off (it was tipping it down outside) and walk through to the restaurant and the told us

"we don't accept children under 14 years old!"

I explained that the website I had reviewed said it was "child friendly" which is why I chose it but she said only over 14 years. Should it not read "teenager friendly" then?? If you want my honest opinion, the manageress took one look at the children and thought "lets make up some new rule"

Ruined my birthday!! But the "Slug and Lettuce" turned it all around and were amazing, I am glad now that the lady in the Wykeham arms was so grumpy!!

A lovely English pub, with wonderful rooms and a great breakfast. The food in the restaurant was very good too, however we felt both the hotel and restaurant were expensive. Winchester is a lovely English town and the hotel is in a good location, the only issue could be parking - if you don't get a spot inside, its almost impossible to find a spot outside!

My wife and I went ot Winchester to see the cathedral and stayed at the Wykeham Arms for a night following a lengthy (4 hour) drive.

On the plus side this is a very quirky, interesting and character full pub. Its accomodation (we stayed in the rooms opposite the pub), was very good. A 'superior double', the room was an excellant size, and very comfortable. The pub itself served a good range of beers from Fullers (plus a guest HSB by Gales, that was also excellant). plus an strong and extensive wine list. The breakfast was superb, all ingrediants of the highest order and well presented.

Things to however watch out for though:

The car parking is best described as 'interesting', but as the hotel insist you leave your keys, and allowed us to park well before check in time this is not a major issue, though a perminant car parking officer is almost required ! Basically once your car is in, walk every where - its only 2 mins to the cathedral and shops. More fundimentally we also ate in the pub in the evening. The food was good quality no doubt, but its expensive, expecially when you bear in mind that even on a Thursday night, and having booked a table 3 weeks in advance, we still ended up in the bar area, where it was very noisy for most of or meal, and for which £23 for a steak (etc) seemed a little excessive. But that above aside its a nice and relaxing place to stay, and as long as you are happy to accept you pay for it, its a good place to stay, and we would recommend it.
