Fantastic oldie-worldie pub and hotel in a beautiful part of the world wrapped in so much history you will find plenty to do on its door step.

Booked two traditional rooms for myself and a colleague both of which were to a very high standard, very clean. My bed was perfectly soft with high quality linen, the bathroom was huge with a great shower and a free mini bar stocked with both beer and water compliments of the house!

The pub is steeped in history with plenty of antiques and artefacts just about everywhere. Great real ales and ciders with a very nice courtyard garden.

We ate dinner in the restaurant with local business colleagues and the food was superb, we can all recommend the fresh fish and desserts but could not fault anything ! Also fantastic breakfast which was freshly cooked to order.

The car park is a little small as are the roads so make sure you book your space and don't turn up in your Winnebago!

Staff were so helpful and friendly, I cannot recommend enough. Looking forward to returning with my wife as this place is a great getaway base for sightseeing, shopping and relaxing.

My wife and I had 3 days in the Wykeham Arms. When you book online, you can never be certain of what you are going to get, but in my view this place undersells itself on its website. It is FULL of memorabilia - pewter mugs, old photographs, headgear, paintings, coronation mugs - it oozes history and is only three minutes' walk from the cathedral. Interesting mixture of pub furniture and seating arrangements. The staff are absolutely excellent - perhaps we are two old fogeys, but it was actually nice - for once - to be "sir" and "madam". They are courteous, attentive, and obliging. The food was not pub grub, or even good pub grub, or even posh pub grub - it is of good restaurant standard - not cheap, but we had a lunch and two evening meals there - can't fault it. Our room - once you have navigated the rickety and slightly scruffy staircase - was excellent. Quirky, but excellent. Quirky in its hotchpotch of furnishing, but clean comfortable bed with cotton bedding and very recently refurbished en suite of very good quality. View over interesting, ancient tiled roof of a different part of the building. Managed to get in the very small car park each day, and there is a little gardened patio area if weather permits. Is, in our view, is a little gem. Supposed to be one of the oldest pubs in the country and has one several awards. Links with New College, Oxford.

Once again we had the pleasure of staying at Wykeham Arms in the room Kelsey. We also enjoyed dinner there on the Saturday night. Simply one of my favourite places in the world! Staff are all so very friendly and helpful - from the bar to the restaurant they all go about their jobs with a smile. The room is tastefully decorated and comfortable although the bathroom could probably do with an update - its fine but perhaps a little tired. The bar is a joy. A lovely atmosphere encouraged by no background music, no TVs and a sign that says mobile phones might be frowned upon - thus you have a chat instead! The restaurant never fails - fabulous, gastro-pub/gourmet food as good as the best places i have eaten in. The menu is good value with mains ranging from £14-£22. And of course you have the beautiful city of Winchester which is always a pleasure at any time of the year. Can't wait to visit again.

Dear Rob H

That really is super to read such a lovely review. My team work tirelesly to create such great memories, and this really does go a long way in rewarding them for that effort. Thanks again, and I have noted your comment about Kelsey bathroom. We are on it.

All the best and see you soon.

The hotel is as historical as the city itself. The room I got on the top floor was bit small but just enough for one people. The welcome package was very heart-warming including nice cookie bars and drinks. I like the small desk with which i managed to write my diary in the evenings. I feels great as the collage and cathedral are just in my sight. The breakfast is very rich and would like to recommend the porridge in their menu.

Although, it is indeed a bit pricey.

Limited, over fancy menu choices, ridiculous high prices, very mean portions... not a place we will be recommending. There are many more reasonably priced places to eat in Winchester with far better choice and range of food.

This establishment is an absolute gem, have eaten here for about eight years, never disappointed! Food excellent, service excellent, surrounding excellent, even the toilets are fabulous! Highly recommend, but would suggest you book as gets busy, even during busy periods it retains it's old world charm as tables are spread out and you don't feel crammed in and are not sat too close to other customers! Good choice of wines and not too pricey.

This review is purely about The Wykeham Arms as a 'pub' as I have never eaten or stayed there. Pop in for a very quick drink early afternoon on a fairly regular basis when visiting Winchester. The welcome from the staff is always first-rate - they know what I usually drink and will talk to you if they are not too busy. The atmosphere is great and the open log fires are fantastic when the weather is cool/dull/raining! An excellent choice of wines … and whiskies, judging by the displays! Not cheap but probably fair for the quality. Excellent location too for historic centre of winchester but parking in the immediate area is horrendous and the WA's car park is only for its residents. Be warned … traffic wardens do patrol the area!
