“Very friendly stay”
Reviewed 16 July 2012

St John's Croft B&B is a lovely old house, run by a very friendly, and helpful family who couldn't do enough for us. We went for a hen weekend recently, and ten of us stayed in four rooms. The breakfast was arranged at a time to suit us (and our hangovers!), and was very relaxed. The rooms were all very clean and well kept. We were given a fresh jug of milk as we arrived for our tea and coffee in the room, which makes a lovely change to UHT which you usually get in B&Bs! Overall our stay was brilliant, and was made so by the lovely family who run it. We will definitely return!

Complete & utter oversight! We booked a room in April, paying a deposit immediately. Our original date had to be changed to a new date, but was confirmed by e-mail by the owner. I e-mailed her 3 days prior to our arrival of time etc. giving our mobile number, we had no reply. On our arrival (in the pouring rain), she met us on the road and was kind enough to help us park, then the bombshell!... are you booked in for tonight? yes 2 nights! She was fully booked with other people - on checking she had not changed from the original dates. We had travelled with our grand-daughter (it was her end of GCSE exams treat) from North Wales, we were tired and just wanted somewhere to rest. A long story - but the owner apologised, gave us a cheque plus a little extra to cover her obvious 'goof' - all this was done outside in the pouring rain, not once did she offer to invite us in, offer us a hot drink or worst of all - offer to find alternative accommodation. We searched for a full 3 hours for a room but to no avail, everywhere was fully booked (we learned later that this was due to the 'Festival of Speed @ Goodwood'). Eventually, we found a room in Salisbury!!!! The landlady of that B&B was horrified how we had been treated. I see that all the other reviews are excellent and so we hope this is a ONE OFF! Your record keeping and communication requires attention!!!.... NEVER AGAIN.

Room Tip: Make sure this lady is up to date with your requirements!!!!!

I am so sorry that we had double booked and that you had such an awful time finding alternative accommodation.
We now have a dedicated diary and have improved our booking system and believe that none of our guests will be double booked in the future.
Kind regards,
Dotty

I envy the last reviewer - she got to stay for 3 weeks! I stayed for one night with my parents and we didn't want to leave. What a stunningly beautiful house this is - just a few minutes walk from the city centre yet quietly situated with lovely views, I could see the cathedral from my room which is one of the lovliest b&b rooms I've ever stayed in. The delighful hostess, Dotty, loves collecting antique and vintage pieces and the style of the house and rooms reflect her taste - understated, elegant and chic! The rooms are super stylish - pale colours, incredibly comfortable antique brass beds adorned with crisp white linen, fluffy white towels in abundance, tea, coffee, TV and free wi fi. Wonderful aga cooked breakfast taken in the cozy kitchen. I can't imagine why anyone would want to pay the prices of some of the city's 'boutique' hotels when one could stay here not only for the reasonable prices but for the opportunity to stay somewhere very special...

Having just moved to Winchester for work, I stayed at St John's Croft B&B for three weeks whilst flat-hunting. The Frasers couldn't have been more lovely hosts. Their beautiful B&B is also their home and they make you feel most welcome, like a member of the family. The rooms are all beautifully appointed and clean with all the conveniences one could wish. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this lovely B&B, so perfectly centrally located and very reasonably priced. If you are looking for a warm welcome in a beautiful setting with a friendly family atmosphere in Winchester, then look no further than St John's Croft B&B!

My wife Linda and I stayed at St. John's Croft at the beginning of our England/Wales and Spain trip this year (November - 2011), and at the end. It was such a great way to begin the trip with excellent hospitality. Flexibility on breakfast time (as when we travel, the last thing we like to do is get up too early!). The beds were very comfortable. Walking distance to downtown Winchester. Everything was very clean. Nick and Dotty were very cheery and welcoming. And we thought it was neat that the son made us breakfast. A truly family run B & B!

Room Tip: The bedroom above the main entry way was where we stayed, and it was large, with it's own wash b...

My friends and I have stayed at St John's Croft every year since 2007 for an annual gathering of friends. The house is beautiful and warm, the hosts Nick, Dotty and their family are stunningly generous, caring and hospitable. I would say that their home is the most welcoming place I have ever stayed at. I love the way the family welcome you into their lives - and the way that you can feel privacy at the same time. It is a genuinely amazing place to stay.

Just returned from a weekend stay in this charming Queen Anne townhouse with stunning views across Winchester towards the cathedral. The owners, (Nick & Dotty) were welcoming and friendly and we were given a lovely high ceilinged bedroom overlooking the split level garden from where we were able to rest, read and plan our excursions into the town centre (5 mins walk down the hill).

In my experience the vast majority of B & Bs are pokey and lack character and one tends to use them perfunctorily, merely as a place to sleep and little else. St John’s Croft was very different; the space, relaxed family atmosphere, and repeated invitation to make ourselves at home, made us want to linger a little before setting out and exploring what the town had to offer.

If you like your B & Bs to have some grace and style, this establishment fits the bill. Cracking breakfast too!
