My partner and I wanted to celebrate out anniversary by getting away for a long weekend. We chose this hotel as we are Boutique hotel lovers! It was just exquisite.
Upon arrival there is plenty of parking, the staff are friendly and welcoming.
All of the rooms (only 24) are named after popular Champagne and wines. (very cute!)
Ours was just divine, all the necessities, nespresso machine, plenty of tea/coffee/drinks, iron, hairdryer.. Large sash windows and air-conned.
The bedding was lush, very soft and a super comfortable bed. All the furnishings were up market and of a very good quality.

The food... Wow.. we had supper in the bistro and breakfast included, of which were both incredible!

We would definitely reccommend the hotel, wether it is to stay or even just to enjoy the wonderful food.

Also.. perfect location. A few minute walk into the little town, plenty of shops and the Cathedral of course! We took the 3 mile walk up to St Catherines Hill too.

Room Tip: All rooms are perfect. We had a room at the front of the hotel, which was on the road but there was...

Winchester was the first in this quality group, and when it opened we lived locally. It looked wonderful, but the idea of staying, or even eating, there was unrealistic. A couple of years ago we had lunch there with a group of friends (excellent) and on the basis of that decided to book a dinner bed and breakfast deal.
Some people may not like the carefully-crafted old-fashioned ambience with the hop-draped windows and the wine producers posters, but we love it. The service is equally old-fashioned but without being the least bit stuffy - just how good service should be. Our room was delightful - clean, comfortable and welcoming.
Meals, both dinner and breakfast, were excellent. No need to go into details, because the standard was uniformly high. The wine list is comprehensive, and the sommelier helpful and friendly. One particular feature is the large range of wines available in half-bottles. My wife is a fish eater, and I am a carnivore, so we often have to compromise on wine - not so here.
It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for in this world, and we look forward to going back.

We have just returned from a short break in Winchester. We chose to stay at the Hotel du Vin as we had previously stayed at the sister hotel in Harrogate and were impressed by it. The Winchester branch was the first Hotel du Vin opened. It is situated very centrally, within walking distance of the cathedral, the shops, the river and the Guildhall. It has a couple of outside areas, one quite a large, lawned courtyard with tables and chairs and a pretty pond and fountain in a walled area. This was very quiet with no road noise although the front of the hotel is situated on the road. We stayed in the "Courvoisier" room, which was large and airy and air conditioned. It had two large sash windows overlooking the garden courtyard and was very quiet. The king-sized bed was beautifully comfortable. There is a free-standing bath in the bedroom but also a walk-in shower in a separate bathroom. We had dinner and breakfast for the two days we stayed there and the food was excellent - bistro style. There is a very good choice of hot and cold dishes on the breakfast menu. All the staff without exception are polite, helpful, efficient and knowledgeable.

There is a lot to see in the surrounding area - including the cathedral, where Jane Austen is buried, and you can see the illuminated Winchester bible. The Mill, on the River Itchen and owned by the National Trust, is well worth a visit - you can go downstairs to watch the mill race turn the waterwheel and they have some sessions where you can see the grain being milled and turned into stoneground flour which is then sold in the Trust shop. There is a lovely walk by the river. You can also visit the Guildhall which houses (allegedly) King Arthur's original Round Table! There are lots of National Trust properties in the area. We visited Mottisfont which has beautiful grounds, including a walled rose garden and the ancient spring (or font) which produces 11,000 litres of water per minute!

If you wish to visit nearby Highclere Castle, which played Downton Abbey in the TV series, I would advise you to check opening times as these are sporadic when not high season, and book ahead. We had planned to visit but found that all the tickets had sold out for weeks!

Would definitely go back to the Hotel du Vin to explore more of this beautiful area.

Room Tip: Try "Courviosier" the room is featured on the hotel website in the Accommodation section...

We stayed here on the Friday night deal for dinner, bed and breakfast

The cottage room was just excellent and a good size, drinks in the bar followed by good food in the restaurant

We would highly recommend Hotel Du Vin and the Winchester hotel is a beautiful building well placed for all that Winchester has to offer

Check in and check out was very friendly and informative and a refreshing change from many hotel groups

We stayed here for our english honeymoon before we went abroad and loved it. free upgrade, free champers and a discount in the restaurant. Good location, lovely room and a fantastic wine list - if a little pricey - we'll be back next august for 2nd anniversary. Worth every penny to feel cosseted.

Hotel du Vin certainly changed after the acquisition by MWB, and in my opinion there are better value options in all their locations. The dining in particular is somewhat samey and lacks originality and to a certain extent quality. That said the staff try hard and the chain has a cosy feeling.
