“Great Sunday night deal”
Reviewed 1 September 2014

Stayed at the HDV Winchester on Sunday night last week (Aug Bank holiday weekend). As usual for the chain, the room was excellent, comfy bed, ipod dock (albeit the old connector), nespresso machine, flat screen TV with Sky sports, and free wifi. the deal was a cheap rate on the room (£70) if you stayed for dinner and spent more than £75 Inc drinks. The staff are very efficient and helpful. we had a drink in the bar before dinner where the knowledgeable barman made up a specific cocktail for my wife - one minor niggle, the bar is bit small and cramped, and so to dinner....the food was FANTASTIC, as good as any 5* restaurant I've eaten at (only gripe was that the mains do not include any sides or veg which have to ordered separately). great breakfast, all in all the bill came to £200 for the room, dinner B&B . very good value for a great short breatk. Free carpark at the rear - highly reccomended.

Room Tip: ask for a garden facing room, they are quieter.

Thank you for joining us for our Sunday night room & dinner offer.

We are glad to hear that the experience exceeded your expectations. Since creating our new Bar ( previously the drawing room ) our extensive selection of quality drinks products & freshly made cocktails has flourished within the local area. The success of the bar is predominantly due to the knoweldge & creativity demonstrated by our dedicated bar team, & we are thrilled to hear this was a memorable part of your stay with us.

We are also delighted to hear your stay with us compared to the consistent service & offering experienced throughout the hotel du Vin brand.

The Hotel du Vin chain have a good reputation and this Winchester hotel is no exception. We stayed on a Sunday night on a special deal which reduced the cost of the room. We had drinks in the courtyard which was lovely in the late afternoon, although the drinks (I believe) are over-priced. We ate in the Bistro where the food was wonderful and the service impeccable. Our room was not huge but was quiet and comfortable with a very nice bathroom. On checking out we did point out that there was a large damp patch on the wall in our room and the wallpaper was lifting off and also that our bathroom window would not stay open, but the receptionist assured us that the maintenance staff would take a look straight away.

I would definitely recommend a stay here and would not be put off staying again myself.

Has a very unimaginative and limited menu, which is over priced.

For the starter I had tomato bruscheta (definition - "consisting of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with tomatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper"). Instead I got on a half toasted piece of bread an un-ripe tomato, an egg and anchovies. When it was pointed out the bread was only half toasted and soggy they kindly re-did the starter; however when it came back it was even worse and this time on a slice of stick bread, barely toasted. Too polite to return it a third time.

The tomato salad with the main course came out with a green tomato and the couple of red tomatoes which were un-ripe and tasteless. £4 bought you a very small bowl of green salad. To be fair the steak was delicious but ruined by everything else. Both my wife and I left with stomach cramp. I certainly will not be returning in a hurry and there are better restaurants, which are a lot better value down by the cathedral.

Lighting in the restaurant and bar area is so poor that it is difficult to read the menu. Suggest you take a torch.

Thank you for feedbak on your recent dining experience here with us.

It is unfortunate to hear that this was not a positive one.

We currently have three seperate menus available in our Bistro, with our set Prix Fixe menu & al Fresco menu in operation in addition to our a la carte menu. with a selection of 10 starters & 16 main courses from our a la carte selection to choose from, we are suprised to hear that the menu is perceived as limited.

It is with our sincerest apologies that your starter was not produced to your expectations, and while it is reassuring to hear that the team were attentive in both replacing & redesigning the dish to your preference, it is unforuntate to hear that this dish was still not enjoyable. We do of course ensure that our chef is aware of all feedback regarding our dishes in order to ensure a consistent delivery, as well as support improving our offering where necessary.

Our front of house team & chefs wish to ensure excellent value for money within our dining experiences, and that should you come across a dish, in this case a side order, that you feel is insufficient in portion size, we will of course have additional amounts of the dish produced where requested. It is in no way or intention to under-portion our dishes.

All feedback on our Bistro offering and service is delivered to our teams regularly in order to help us to improve where needed. Your comments will of course help to shape those improvements.

We also appreciate your feedback on the Bistro lighting during your evening meal, which we serve by candlelight to ensure a romantic ambience throughout the hotel. We are of course aware that this ambience is not to everyones taste, and have torches readily available on request during menu selection where necessary.

Thank you again for your feedback in helping us to improve our offering & service. Our new a la carte menu will arrive at the beginning of October, & we would be delighted to for you to join us and give further feedback on our new dishes.

This is a lovely old hotel, within a short walk of the old town. The courtyard is perfect for an afternoon drink, and the room was wonderful, with Nespresso machine and a bath tub at the end of the bed! It's a shame that the room overlooks car parks (handy but unattractive), but pull the blinds and it's heaven for a romantic weekend. Dinner was good but could have been a lot better for the price. Top notch food is available at the nearby Wykeham Arms, which I really can recommend.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us.

While its great to hear that depsite the view your room & facilities exceeded expectations, it is unfortunate to hear that our Bistro offering was not.

We make a commitment to our Bistro guests to ensure we source the best possible ingredients for our dishes, paired with a wine selection to compliment these ingredients well. Our intention is that the cooking & presentation of our dishes, matched with an attentive & knoweldgable front of house team, support the value of our Bistro pricing. We really apporeciate feedback from our guests where this intention has not been delivered successfully.

We would be delghted to advise you on our range of dining offers & promotions available during your next visit with us, and hope to see you return to us soon.

Thank you for helping us to improve,

Having stayed at several Hotel Du Vin's, I was looking forward to my stay here. I was not disappointed. I had a room on the top floor, just a word of warning here if you have mobility problems, they are pretty steep stairs!
The room was beautifully appointed with air conditioning, which was very welcome as it was scorching outside. Staff were very helpful and carried my suitcase up the stairs.
Super comfy bed, large bathroom with powerful shower. Had an excellent night's sleep.
Breakfast as at other HDV's, so plenty of cold buffet options and cooked options ordered from the menu.
Free parking is a definite bonus and 2 minutes walk into the town.
Wifi good and also free
Will definitely stay here again when I'm in Winchester
