“Beautiful building set in water meadows”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

You can walk to St Cross across the water meadows and its a lovely sight. There are often guides there to explain the history etc. If you can find one as the history needs some explaining.

“Hidden England”

Off the beaten track, a little find of a gem. The cafe serves homemade cakes and lovely cups of tea!

“Experience a medieval tradition”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

Visiting Winchester on a pleasant sunny Spring day we took a short walk along a tributary of the River Itchen, starting near the King Alfred statue and following the green signs to ‘St.Cross via Water Meadows’, and after about 25 minutes came across the Hospital of St.Cross. Not a hospital in the true sense, but a collection of Almshouses founded in the 12th Century, and reputed to be the oldest charitable institution in the country. There were a number of residents, called ‘Brothers’, sitting on seats outside their dwellings soaking up the sunshine. We were told about a medieval tradition called the ‘Wayfarer’s Dole’, which is an offering of ale and bread offered to travellers, and which any passing traveller can ask for free of charge. If you want the same experience as that of a pilgrim 900 hundred years ago, then do visit and ask for the Wayfarer’s Dole (and as a thank you, and to keep the tradition going, why not leave a small donation). After our visit we took bus No.1 back to the city centre.

“A nice walk - fantastic ancient buildings”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

A lovely walk out from the city along the river and through the water meadows.

beautiful old buildings in an undamaged setting - This is as close to Norman England as you can get now,

Don't forget to ask for you Dole - an old tradition which is still kept alive.

This is a must visit place if you have the time.

“a very special place”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

a truly unique historical place. The ancient buildings are like stepping back into another century and I strongly recommend that you ask for "the Wayfarer's Dole" if you visit the gift shop and speak to the Porter Catherine, who will regale you with fascinating tales of the area
