Owner description: Winchester City Mill is a working watermill dating back to at least Saxon times; now fully restored by the National Trust, the City Mill is probably the oldest working watermill in the UK. Inside visitors can discover more about the mill’s long and fascinating history as well as see the mill in action and learn how we produce traditional stone-ground wholemeal flour using the power of the River Itchen. Our team of volunteer millers provide flour milling demonstrations every Saturday and Sunday as well as Wednesdays during the summer months. The City Mill is also home to a wide variety of wildlife including kingfishers, grey wagtails, wild trout, water voles and even otters which can be viewed from our on-site observation cameras.

A small mill to visit in the centre of Winchester. A little plot being classed as a piece of garden. Not a lot to it. Part of the mill has otters there. Nice to see them thriving. Flour is freshly ground there and sold at a reasonable price.

An interesting place with a small museum display (video and a model) - but due to recent high water levels no milling has been possible for a couple of months.

Not really worth the current entry fee - but when everything is back in working order I am sure it will be fantastic.

I stayed here years ago when it was a YHA - so interesting to see the changes !

Many thanks for your review.
You will be pleased to know that our hardworking staff and volunteers have now finished repairing all of the damage to the City Mill caused during the recent flooding and the mill is now back in action producing flour once more.

The bridge outside was a bonus, the mill itself was very interesting and a NT property. Worth a visit if you have time, this town has so much to see and do.

Wanted to show the kids what a mill was and they spent almost an hour milling wheat to flour by hand. I thought the set up was great esp for kids, we had a great volunteer who took us around and showed us the mill and my kids also enjoyed trying to get a peek at Oscar the hedgehog. Loved the mill and the river. Highly recommended!

The Mill is very small so you will only need 1/2hr to get around at best. It is a working mill so you can see the water wheel in action and the millstones grinding the flour. The added unknown to us at the time attraction was the fact they have otters visiting the Mill, so you may get lucky and see one.

There is also a small gift shop and you can purchase the Mill flour if you enjoy baking.

Worth a visit if you are in Winchester, but suggest you plan other visits around this one as there is not a huge amount to do or see and Winchester has a lot to offer.

Thank Darren T
