Have visited this hotel on several occasions before but have never been asked to pay for parking before.
A new bizarre tiered charging system is in place which although is a reasonable rate overnight suddenly rockets up at 8am. As breakfast doesn't even start until 8am on a Sunday you will get stung whether you opt to remain in their own car park or move to the public one infront of the hotel. Both charge hefty hourly rates. (Ironically the public car park is actually free until 8am)

All in all, it was a farcical situation, guests started leaving and re parking outside the hotel 'before' eating breakfast. There was lots of complaining and disgruntled people around. Not a nice atmosphere at the breakfast table and an unnecessary stress on those who felt they had to move their cars to save money.
We didn't move but were forced to pay up in order to get out of the car park later even though we had paid over £100 for the room. We might have expected a low budget hotel to charge for parking but I am surprised they have stooped so low here.
I'm afraid I won't be going back, the spa isn't even Bannatyne's standard!

Room Tip: Get a room near reception. It is like a maze in there, all corridors look the same, numerous differe...

Dear Guest

Thank you for your recent review of the hotel.

I would like to take this opportunity to clarify that the car park at the front of the hotel is run by others completely separately from the hotel - and as such we have no control over the charges levied there. We simply offer guests the opportunity to use the hotels car park if they so choose (and it certainly is not mandatory).

Given the large signs at the entrance and throughout the car park I can only presume that you were aware of the charges before parking your vehicle and as such you chose to park your car with us as opposed to using one of the many local alternatives.

I do hope that you will choose to stay with us again for future visits to the area - but whether any of our customers decide to park on our car park or another - or whether they choose to move their vehicles between locations during their stay - is absolutely their decision and not one which the hotel can - or indeed would - choose to influence.

stayed overnight before our cruise, hotel was easy to find, clean, but rather warm as our room was just above the entrance and the smokers stood outside so we could not leave the window open for health reasons the smoke triggers by asthma using the air con keeps me awake, we had a fire alarm sound and were ready to evacuate when it was switched off, apparently the duty manager thought he could just do that and not inform guests!!!! never used the pool but it did look inviting, walked into Winchester and had a lovely meal. will use this hotel again as it was convenient.

Dear Guest

Thank you so much for your recent review of the hotel.

I note that this was a pre cursor to a cruise and we are lucky to be so close to Southampton and yet also to offer our guests all that the beautiful City of Winchester has to offer --- a great holiday before your holiday !

I would also like to reassure you again that our fire alarm was NOT "switched off" --- we operate a pre alarm system which allows our trained team the opportunity to investigate the reasons for an alarm before fully evacuating the building.

Given that you were in one of our Ground Floor bedrooms it is likely that you heard this pre alarm noise from our main reception desk rather than the main fire alarm - which sounds throughout the whole building.

Our number one priority is guest safety - and I am eager to reassure you that we do not silence full fire alarms at our own discretion.

On arrival my heart sank at the sight of the cheap plastic flowers adorning the walls outside the hotel. Don't expect any hidden gem here: this is a purely functional hotel located in an uninspiring setting - a large council car park. It does not exude 4-star class but resembles a glorified Travelodge. The layout inside is labyrinthine and you'll be wandering forever trying to find out the shortest way to the reception, half-expecting the Minotaur to pop-up and put you out of your misery.
Rooms are spacious though, well-appointed, quiet and very clean. The clingy shower curtain fells dated and cheap though.
We asked for our air-conditioning to be turned off and a very polite boy came within a few minutes to correct the situation.
Breakfast is copious and varied but the "Tea or coffee?" routine becomes tedious after a while; the tea was stewed.
The pool area is fine but feels claustrophobic as it is overlooked by the gym and the winding corridors. Again this is functional but lacks something special.
The extra charge levied for parking felt a bit mean considering we had already paid £105 for a night.
To sum it up: we had a good night's sleep in the spacious bed. This efficiently-run hotel is ideal for business travellers but lacklustre and too generic for a romantic break.

Dear "Hotel Inspector"

Thank you for your recent review of the hotel.

Reading through this I am of course delighted that you found our bedrooms to be spacious, well appointed, clean and quiet, and that we were able to assist you with your bedroom query in a quick and polite manner. I am also delighted that you had an enjoyable breakfast, and will pass your kind comments on to our team.

I note that you did not like some of our exterior design decisions but then - as they say - `beauty is in the eye of the beholder`.

The hotel is situated in the centre of this lovely city and an ideal place to stay if you want to visit for a day or two. Once you have parked you have a variety of sights, walks and restaurants to enjoy. The hotel itself is very comfortable and it is worth paying a little more for a garden view room, as it was a real delight. Our room overlooked the garden and was perfect. We ate in the restaurant at night but wished we had gone out to one in the city, for although the quality of food was quite good the portions were small. The breakfast was very good.

Room Tip: Choose a garden view room in the new refurbished part of the hotel

Fourth time at this hotel excellently managed with first class staff and facilities. Parking is a slight problem but the staff are very helpful and usually sort out parking problems for

I didn't drive on this occasion so I had a short walk to the hotel from the train station, which wasn't difficult with a roller suitcase; if you have a lot of luggage obviously you'd need to take a very short cab ride; all in all a convenient location. Apart from the somewhat cool welcome at the reception, I enjoyed my weekend break here very much a couple of months ago. The hotel is modern - no historic character if that's what you are looking for - but the contemporary corporate style is softened by friendly staff both in the (very clean and comfortable) spa and at the restaurant / bar, which also has a terrace for summer dining. The food was quite good, (i had dinner there twice) especially the breakfast where there was plenty to choose from, and the service very attentive and professional. My room was quiet, a good size, very clean, with all the requisite amenities. I also enjoyed a lovely spa experience with well trained therapists. Just a short walk to the historic centre of Winchester, I would definitely consider staying at this hotel again.

Visited this hotel straight after coming from another hotel near Windsor. Upon entering I was a bit taken aback by the attitude of the receptionist who was not quite rude but not very friendly either! Parking is a pain in quite frankly. They have a car park directly outside, which I believe is where most people would park without thinking. This a council car park and unless you have £7 in loose change then you have to go to the hassle of ringing a number to pay by card. The hotel does have it's own car park, just not very well signposted! The room was fantastic in fairness, very clean, very modern. I had room 227, the grand suite. The spa was ok, relaxing enough, but nothing special. The food was very nice, service was very good too. Overall I just felt the hotel was lacking a friendly feel, which was a shame.

Room Tip: Ask for room 227, the grand suite!
