I have just had an overnight spa break with a friend. The Hotel was very nice and clean. The dinner and breakfast were very good served by friendly staff. However, £4.40 for a bottle of water with dinner!!!!
Watch out for the parking, we were told it worked out at £7 in the public car park and £8 in the Hotel car park. We decided the extra £1 for security was fine. When we went to pay on check out the receptionist tried to charge us £12!!! Luckily we were on the ball and she changed the charge to £7.
The spa/pool are small but adequate for a 2 day break. We would visit again, but we would ask for tap water and not drink in the bar as it was far to expensive.

Dear Guest

Thank you so much for your FANTASTIC review of The Winchester Hotel and Spa.

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay - and particularly about your comments concerning our friendly and helpful staff.

I am of course also sorry that you found our drinks to be expensive. We believe that they are reasonably priced for a four star hotel, and I hope to be able to welcome you back again to stay with us very soon.

Just got back from a weekend stay at the Winchester Hotel. Check in was fairly quick but there was a wedding party on at the time so reception was busy. This did not slow things down however. We were allocated room 107 in the first floor overlooking the hotels car park. Again no issue with the room selection. The room and clean and we had tea/coffee facilities in the room. There was also an iron and ironing board provided. It was confusing trying to find the room and it is a bit of a rabbit warren but you can’t get lost as it’s one long corridor. The bed was comfy, the bath/shower was fine with plenty of hot water. There was a flat screen tv in the room but as we were only sleeping there I can’t say we really used it that much.
The hotel is located about a 5min walk from the shops/restaurants so we did not have dinner in the hotel. We did however have breakfast twice. This was fine and we had a large choice of fruits/cereals and cooked English breakfast.
Overall the hotel is very nice and the location is great. If I am in the area again I would stay here again.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in July. We chose the hotel for the location close to the town centre and the swimming pool and spa. The rooms are a reasonable size and the location is 10 minutes walk to the centre, but this is not a great part of town.
The bar service was excellent and we eat there one night having been out all day. They also have a small bites menu which was very good.
The main restaurant, Hunters, is very dated and at breakfast plays Radio 2 extremely loudly. Breakfast is disappointing with a poor hot and cold buffet. A hotel with a full service restaurant should be able to cook breakfast to order not leave it in the usual trays.
There is some noise from the nearby railway station, particularly at night with freight trains.
The pool is very badly designed with two separate areas, both small and cramped. This not a pool for those that like a good swim.
There is a large car park outside as well as hotel parking. Hotel parking is expensive and unjustified, as other reviewers have mentioned.
An OK hotel but could be a lot better.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your recent review of the hotel.

Whilst I am of course delighted that you enjoyed our bar service I am sorry that you would prefer an alternative style of service than that of our Breakfast buffet. We find that the buffet style of service suits the vast majority of our guests in that It allows them more flexibility and choice - but we are grateful for your feedback.

I am confused at your comment regarding the hotels location not being in a great part of town - in that we are situated a few minutes walk from the centre directly opposite one of Winchester`s main conservation areas.

I have used this hotel on multiple occasions and have never been disappointed or had a bad experience. The staff is excellent all the way around from the front desk to the restaurant and housekeeping - polite, friendly and helpful. The rooms vary in size by price but always comfortable and always clean. The bedding is very good. The shower is hot and has enough power. I have stayed in the front, the back and the side and never had an issue with noise. Venturing into the city is an enjoyable 5 minute walk down well kept streets. As a business traveler, eating in the hotel is sometimes necessary, and the restaurant serves better than average hotel food with numerous items well above that and more than tasty. The breakfast is excellent. The hotel maintains a quality fitness facility that also includes a pool, whirlpool, steam room and sauna. The TV has a good selection. I will never hesitate to stay here when traveling to Winchester for business or pleasure.

Have visited this hotel on several occasions before but have never been asked to pay for parking before.
A new bizarre tiered charging system is in place which although is a reasonable rate overnight suddenly rockets up at 8am. As breakfast doesn't even start until 8am on a Sunday you will get stung whether you opt to remain in their own car park or move to the public one infront of the hotel. Both charge hefty hourly rates. (Ironically the public car park is actually free until 8am)

All in all, it was a farcical situation, guests started leaving and re parking outside the hotel 'before' eating breakfast. There was lots of complaining and disgruntled people around. Not a nice atmosphere at the breakfast table and an unnecessary stress on those who felt they had to move their cars to save money.
We didn't move but were forced to pay up in order to get out of the car park later even though we had paid over £100 for the room. We might have expected a low budget hotel to charge for parking but I am surprised they have stooped so low here.
I'm afraid I won't be going back, the spa isn't even Bannatyne's standard!

Room Tip: Get a room near reception. It is like a maze in there, all corridors look the same, numerous different lifts take you to odd floors. We seemed to be on a wild goose chase going up and down corridors only to end up in a room above the hotel car park above which is exactly where we had started!

Dear Guest

Thank you for your recent review of the hotel.

I would like to take this opportunity to clarify that the car park at the front of the hotel is run by others completely separately from the hotel - and as such we have no control over the charges levied there. We simply offer guests the opportunity to use the hotels car park if they so choose (and it certainly is not mandatory).

Given the large signs at the entrance and throughout the car park I can only presume that you were aware of the charges before parking your vehicle and as such you chose to park your car with us as opposed to using one of the many local alternatives.

I do hope that you will choose to stay with us again for future visits to the area - but whether any of our customers decide to park on our car park or another - or whether they choose to move their vehicles between locations during their stay - is absolutely their decision and not one which the hotel can - or indeed would - choose to influence.
