at the end of the cathedral path, this museum does a great job storytelling Winchester. A big model shows the old city plan.

Well presented and right in the centre of the City there are some interesting and important artefacts from Roman Winchester onwards. It's free to enter and set over three floors. Very well presented and clean but quite small. The staff are friendly and helpful and there's a lovely little shop. A good, place to visit but not for more than half an hour.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this museum was considering it is free to enter (I left a donation - they deserve it)! I walks you through the history of the city, and the model city at the end was extremely helpful to help me get my bearings for the rest of my trip. A good place to start your sightseeing in Winchester, as it will give context to all the things you see around you as you explore. HIghly recommended.

Although it looks small, ther are 3 floors that are pretty packed. Like Winchester it is well worth a visit and we enjoyed it!

This small but well planned museum covers from prehistory to the present day (with a section on Jane Eyre). It's superbly laid out in a lovely building with enough scope for younger visitors. Enjoyable and informative - and free, though contributions are much welcomed!

I can't believe we hadn't been here before now, this museum is such a gem! We were in the city for the BBC History Magazine weekend and in between talks thought we would pop in. We popped in 3 times in the end because all of the displays were so well done and interesting that one visit wasn't enough! The model of 1870 Winchester on the ground floor was fascinating, the date range and variety of exhibits was superb, there is a well stocked gift shop, and all the staff were charming. We cannot recommend this museum highly enough.

A really wonderful place to visit for the whole family. On entering you will be struck by a stunning model of the City of Winchester - if your new to the City its a great introduction. Then you go up through the floors in a "time machine" ending up past the Romans and earlier. There is a little shop at the front which sells some lovely local stuff but not too expensive. The staff and volunteers are really friendly. So don't go past - pop in and soak in the lovely Winchester atmosphere. LOVELY for the whole family.

Some interesting displays. Three floors each dealing with a particular period (Roman, Saxon/Norman and Victorian). Highlights for me were the mosaic on the top floor and the huge model of the city in the 1870s. Free entry as well though donations obviously welcomed.

Not a great deal to see but it was well organised and the city model was very informative.
Learnt about Jane Austen too.
Have a look in for half an hour, it's worth it!

I hadn't been inside this museum before, despite having walked past it on the way to the Cathedral a number of times. It has three different historical periods over the three floors. It is well laid out, with a mixture of models, exhibits, artefacts, things to do for children interspersed with lots of information. Definitely recommended.
