We had a lovely stay at the Westgate Hotel. The location was ideal for our friend's wedding in the Guildhall, it was really central for shopping and for the amazing Winchester Castle too. With two very young children and all our luggage, the stairs to the second floor initially felt like a bit a of a climb (!) but once we were in the rooms were huge, and really nicely furnished. It is a really old building which obviously has its inconveniences but also appeal; and being on the second floor we heard no noise at all from the pub and only a little from the street outside. Personally I loved all the individual wooden furniture and the carefully chosen paint and wallpapers, and feeling like we were part of the old city.

The check -in and -out times were really generous, and the staff even offered us further flexibility if we needed somewhere to leave luggage or get changed for the wedding. There is short-stay parking immediately outside the hotel for unloading, and a multi-storey car park right around the corner for a longer stay- again staff were very helpful in giving us directions.

One of the highlights of our stay was the breakfast- a very friendly welcome to us and our little ones, great selection of cooked options, freshly squeezed juice, delicious fruit salad, in a really comfortable and interesting setting.

This was the first ever hotel stay for my 2 and 3 year old boys, and they loved it too.

Thank you for your lovely review. I know what it's like travelling with small children and I'm sorry you were on the second floor but I think they were the only rooms at the time of booking. Your children were lovely and your little boy who came to the kitchen door to ask me if he could help was adorable. Glad you had a good stay and we hope to welcome you again. Helen

The Westgate hotel is situated in the city centre! First sight appears fine but unfortunately no car park, which is a pity because you then have to pay and display! Try to park for more than 24 hours and it's fun and games with the council, not easy!
The hotel is ok,, proprietor was friendly enough but unfortunately was " too tired" to make us coffee later in the evening,, 23:00 hrs, fair enough!
Bathroom looked like something from I imagine East Germany circa 1975 but main room was quite nice! Didn't sleep a wink due to traffic outside but hey, it's the city centre! Overall,, wouldn't stay there again but Winchester is expensive and forgettable actually!

The first leg of our adventure started here (walking the first 30 miles of the South Downs way)we would have liked to have had the offer of food but there wasn't any available, however had a good few drinks and had a good laugh with the locals. Nice clean, comfortable rooms. Breakfast was very good with good quality produce used.

I'm sorry we weren't able to offer you an evening meal during your stay but thank you for your kind comments on the other aspects. We hope to start doing an evening menu in the near future.

Winchester is expensive and I booked late but still a good trip. Rather warm and I was anxious about traffic noise but quiet enough over night. Good breakfast. Mine host gave a little too much emphasis to the ms in ms Roberts and the stairs are not for the faint hearted.

Room Tip: No lift and steep stairs.

Sorry not to have replied sooner. Yes the stairs are steep and narrow but the building has been here for a few hundred years and there is just not any way a lift could be incorporated. I have to agree also that it can be noisy outside, but it is a city and we are fairly central. I've probably developed "boiler makers ear" over the years. We have only two rooms of the eight at the back of the hotel. Keats and Trollope. I hope you'll stay again and if those rooms are available we'll certainly allocate one of them to you.

I spent a few nights in the Westgate Hotel on a recent business trip.

I felt the room was over priced and was noisy as it's located on a busy roundabout, however, overall it was clean and had adequate facilities.

The service was good, and the staff friendly.

I'm sorry not to have replied sooner. Winchester is a very expensive place to stay with a great shortage of moderately priced rooms. Our rates run from £70 to £85 bed and breakfast which makes us one of the best value hotels in town. The breakfast is extensive ranging from fresh orange juice, fresh fruit, cereal, anything from a full English breakfast to omelettes or Eggs Benedict, toast, tea and coffee. All included in the room rate. You won't find any where else in Winchester offering this value for money.
