“Nothing Special”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2013

The main thing the Merton has going for it is location: across the road from the bus station and three minutes walk from the railway station on the main road into town. It's an old building and although it has had some modernisation it could do with a bit more - particularly the plumbing. Our hot tap was hard to turn off, the loo wouldn't flush (there is "a knack" according to the staff) and the loo seat fell off (but was swiftly replaced once reported).
The room was warm (not too warm) and clean but the decor was a bit tired. Soundproofing could be better with the TV from a nearby room clearly audible.
The food, however, was excellent and not too expensive. There was limited choice at breakfast (although they say they can be flexible) but the "full English" was tasty and well-cooked. Lunch and evening meals were very good and unless you want Indian or Chinese probably your best bet in Hereford.
It was OK for a night or two - as long as you don't want to spend a long time in your room - but I wouldn't recommend it for a luxury break or special occasion.

Room Tip: The hotel is on a main road so rooms at the back would be quieter

I chose this hotel because it was only 5 minutes from the railway station and the same to walk to the town centre and cathedral. We only stayed one night for a short break to look at Hereford. All the staff were lovely and really helpful. It felt almost like staying with family. The bar was cheerful and full of locals at Happy Hour. The food was superb and home cooked with generous portions for both evening meal and breakfast. Yes the hotel would benefit from some redecoration but there is a very comfortable feel about the place. I would recommend it for a short break in Hereford.

Room Tip: May be best to ask for a room not on the front of the hotel if you are bothered by traffic noise.

I stayed here for one night at the start of the year. I absolutely loved it! The staff were so nice and helpful, my room was perfect - clean and fresh! Ideal for a stay on my own, maybe on the smaller side for two people but don't get me wrong its not crammed at all. Also pleased to see a lovely clean bathroom! I'd definitely stay here again. keep up the good work!

The hotel has an old and tired feel to it but the the staff were lovely and the breakfast was good. The car park behind the Odeon cinema across the road is free after 6.30 p.m. on a Saturday until Monday morning. The stay would not be cheap if you had to pay parking as well.

Room Tip: It's noisy at the front when we stayed on a Saturday night. Ask for a quiet room at the back.

I thank the reviewer for their comments, however whilst parking is free overnight there is now a charge of £1 to park on a Sunday.

We stayed at the Merton Hotel for one night.

It is rather dowdy e.g the stair carpet is in poor condition. The room was small, with a floor that sqeaked wherever one stepped. The same applied to the bathroom.

The hot tap in the bathroom leaked water from its base. We stay in hotels quite frequently and there are often faults in the bathroom which one would have thought would have should have been found during the cleaning of he room , and not left for the guests to find.

But there were positives.

Our room at the rear of the hotel was extremely quiet despite the fact that the hotel is situated on a busy road. The bar is very pleasant. The owner/manager is very welcoming and attentive.

Room Tip: May sure your room is away from the road.

Me and My Husband stopped at the Merton Hotel when we went to Hereford to pick up a car he had bought. Its on the main road easy to find, we parked behind the Odean Cinema, which is the Bus station over the road. It cost us £4.50 and we left the car until the next day. Parking is a problem. But that suited us fine just staying the 1 night. Clean in our Hotel room, the bed was nice and cmfortable, the shower was a problem but I loved having a long soak in the bath, plenty of hot water. We enjoyed the meal that late afternoon, Garlic Mushrooms for starter were the best, wished I knew what they cooked them in, lovely sauce and the Steaks were fantastic, breakfast was also good, top marks. We had a drink in the bar in the evening that was good and they have a happy hour. Good location for the Town few minutes away and they had a Market on saturday morning. We found a Continental Food shop, right up my street, Ukrainian Cousine so we took some home. I thought it would be noisy with the room over looking the front street and a night club over the road, but we never heard anything. Its not 3 start but its ok.

Room Tip: If you do not want to be facing the front street, I suggest you say, but we never had a problem, it...

I stay in the Merton hotel regularly and I can't fault it, the location is right on commercial road and there are some clubs and pubs in the area as well as the hospital within a mile. I have never suffered a great deal of noise there and it's always clean and tidy plus an excellent breakfast.

Try the butty bach real ale a local beer which is highly recommended

Room Tip: If you peace ask for a room at the back of the hotel
