The main thing the Merton has going for it is location: across the road from the bus station and three minutes walk from the railway station on the main road into town. It's an old building and although it has had some modernisation it could do with a bit more - particularly the plumbing. Our hot tap was hard to turn off, the loo wouldn't flush (there is "a knack" according to the staff) and the loo seat fell off (but was swiftly replaced once reported).
The room was warm (not too warm) and clean but the decor was a bit tired. Soundproofing could be better with the TV from a nearby room clearly audible.
The food, however, was excellent and not too expensive. There was limited choice at breakfast (although they say they can be flexible) but the "full English" was tasty and well-cooked. Lunch and evening meals were very good and unless you want Indian or Chinese probably your best bet in Hereford.
It was OK for a night or two - as long as you don't want to spend a long time in your room - but I wouldn't recommend it for a luxury break or special occasion.
