“What a gem !”
Reviewed 24 September 2013

Stayed two nights last weekend. A very special trip with three other friends. We were all absolutely gob-smacked ! The hotel certainly lived up to its expectations but mostly we did not expect the lovely warm welcome we received. SueAnne and her team work very, very hard and nothing is too much trouble, special thanks to her, Taylor & Nick for being so accommodating. We are sure the rest of the team work as hard but do not know all of their names.
The atmosphere there is really great, you almost feel like it is your home, nowhere is off limits. Loved that there were no locks on the bedroom doors, it did not feel like a hotel at all. As there were no facilities for a meal on Friday SueAnne recommended a local pub ( 5 Irish miles away ), The Pandy at Dorstone, we had a great meal with wonderful staff. We then had a lovely meal on Saturday at the hotel, very informal, but great. Wine choice was good they were also very helpful in letting us chill a special bottle of wine in their fridge for consumption in the restaurant. Even our champagne ( which we took with us ) was served in a n ice-bucket & polished glasses. Nothing was too much trouble.
If there was just one tiny incy, wincy criticism ............ the rooms do not seem to cater for a lady using a hairdryer ! Although a hairdryer is very kindly supplied, the power points in proximity to mirrors leave a lot to be desired. But apart from that, we will definitely go again ! Just loved it .... thank you, thank you, thank you !!

Room Tip: Definitely opt for the suites, well worth the money.

Our first sight of Brampton House, Wow...
The house stands so proud and very interesting as we slowly took in all the (to me) beauty of the surroundings and I must say the interiour of the house did not disappoint either, in all its unusual splendor, eclectic collection and atmosphere and as a bonus there's no pomp and ceremony just friendly relaxed staff to attend to your needs by the ring of a bell should you require.
Our room with ensuite was luxurious spacious and extremely comfortable, while I had noticed small areas of unfinished work around the place this did not hinder or make our stay any less pleasurable.
However I would suggest that if I'm lucky enough to return there, that at least a good cook if not a Chef be employed. I certainly won't be dining there if that area of service was to remain the same. Our food experience left us very disappointed to say the least.
I'm not a Chef but I know good food, and that really was below average, I've had better school dinners.

On a second positive note Millers Gin is exceptional.... Well done Martin.

The house like the man himself is unique and I do hope to be back, the relaxed attitude of both Martin and Ioana made all the difference to a very relaxed, make yourself at home stay.
They are lovely people very friendly and welcoming as is Sue the manageress ..

It's a must see to believe and appreciate Hotel. If like me, you like a little home from home feeling then this is the place to be......

I can't say if it is the house that makes everyone staying more approachable and friendly or if it's the Gin o'clock time, but, for most part the other guests were friendly and the banter went towards making the whole experience one I'll remember with pleasure.
So a big Thank you to all ....

We spent one night having bought the Amazon Local deal but wished we'd bought the 3 night package as it was so wonderful.
It is hard to explain how special and relaxing this place is as it really needs to be experienced. On arrival we were shown around the house which has a billiards room, cinema, table tennis room, games room as well as a lovely lounge and a 'curiosity' room. We were given a superb and unexpected afternoon tea and also ate dinner there. Would highly recomend the dinner as the food was superb. A nice touch was the cheese board that was laid out for all guests in the 'wedgewood room'.
Worth mentioning was the free bar that was open to all guests (inc some excellant wines and of course Martin Millars gin), fruit and chocolates that were dotted around the house.
Our room and ensuite was very modern, in contrast to the house that was jam packed with antiques.
Highlights for us was playing billiards and then table tennis after all the other guests had gone to bed, it felt like for a few hours we had compete sole run of the house.
This is a unique and wonderful place and is highly recomended.

Spent two nights here as a birthday treat. We were made welcome and plied with complimentary tea and delicious cake. When we were shown to our room, however, we were very disappointed. We had booked a double room )(not a deluxe) and so realised that we had one of the cheaper rooms - however £165pn for B&B is certainly not cheap! The Butler room was not en suite (which was not explained through the on-line booking service). We had to cross a wide, fairly public, corridor to the shower/toilet, near to an entrance and kitchen/office area used by the hotel staff, including early in the morning. No bathrobes or slippers were provided. The shower/toilet area also housed a set of filing cabinets for the hotel and had large damp patches.

The room was very cold. We mentioned this to the hotel staff but were initially told the heating had been on half an hour. When we returned to the room after dinner it was too cold to feel comfortable. The staff were very helpful, courteously moving us to a suite for the night and very kindly bringing us complimentary champagne to make up for the dampener on our birthday celebrations. The heating was also fixed as promised for the next afternoon.

The room had no hairdryer (one was brought after we asked twice). Also, it had no tea/coffee facilities and no DVD player (as mentioned in the description when we had booked).

Breakfast was OK - but nothing special considering the price.

Overall we felt that although the room does have a small four poster bed, it was overpriced and misdescribed and we certainly couldn't recommend it to others. However the hotel staff tried hard to make our stay a pleasant one.

Room Tip: Avoid the "Butler" room

We have just spent a night here for our wedding anniversary. This is our second time here and it is such a wonderful place. It really is very special. The atmosphere is so relaxing, from the moment that you arrive. You walk through the front door and ......WOW! You are welcomed by Sueanne, who is a gem. Nothing is too much trouble. Tea, coffee or a drink from the free bar. They don't have a drinks license so all the drinks are free. Of course, there is the beautiful Millers Gin on offer. All of the guests tend to gather and chat away in the Wedgewood room. Everyone is so friendly. Free afternoon tea is served 4-6pm. Sandwiches, cake, biscuits. A quick stroll around the garden admiring the building of a two storey treehouse, followed by a few stray hens. Back inside for more afternoon pre-dinner drinks then a quick change for dinner. Choice of two starters, we had the smoked mackerel pâté which was gorgeous. Then buffet main course of either shepherds pie and veg or chilli and rice, then a lovely apricot roulade, brandy snap and cream, all homemade. You get a choice of exquisite wines ( a bottle each!) all for £35 each, an absolute bargain. Oh, and then the biggest cheeseboard I have ever seen which you could help yourself to until bedtime. The rooms are, well, stunning and very warm for such a big old mansion. Antiques fill every nook and cranny, the place is spotlessly clean and there must be an army of cleaners dusting all of the ornaments but we never saw them. The icing on the cake was.....meeting Martin Miller himself as he strolled through the Wedgewood room. He was so chatty and didn't mind a bit when I asked for a photo of me with him, as I have been going to his hotels for the last 7 years and drinking his gin since then. We used to go to Glencott House but it had to be sold as it cost so much to run. His hotels are so special and unique that you should visit them while you can because you don't know how long they will be around. We look forward to trying the ones in Devon. I can't praise the staff enough for making our stay such a wonderful one. 10/10 :-)

Room Tip: All of the rooms are different and unique. You don't spend much time in them as its just like be...

We had the most wonderful time at Great Brampton House. Because other reviewers had said they were not there long enough, we booked three nights and then ended up staying four. We could not bear to leave.
The manager Sue is an absolute star, she is a lovely kind person and does everything to make sure all is perfect for you. Nicci and the rest of the staff are all so good and go out of their way to make everything lovely.

The house and grounds, as others have said, are beautiful. Met Mr Miller and his lovely wife who are such nice people. Dinner in the evening is very good with lots of home cooked food. I recommend you have dinner it is worth it, the atmosphere in the dining room is lovely. Why bother looking for somewhere else to eat when you are staying in this beautiful place.

We met some lovely people and had such a lot of fun. One couple we met went home and then came back again the next night whilst we were there, they loved it so much. It is a wonderful atmosphere. All the rooms are lovely so it does not matter which one you have. We cannot wait to go back. If anyone is thinking of going there just do it.
(Hello Sue, Nicci and all from K and F xxxx)

I took my partner for a surprise weekend away to this amazing place. Nothing disappointed, the food, ambiance, the staff, rooms in fact everything was perfect. We can't wait to go back and hopefully next we shall be able to stay in the treehouse room. Antiques and curiosities everywhere
As others have said Sue is a wonderful manager and hostess, Sophie is a star and told me she loves working there, Taylor was perfect even though it was his first time serving breakfasts.

Room Tip: No room service and no pool so cannot be rated on those. All the rooms are top notch, all with thei...
