“Tapas in Hertford”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

Great food, in traditional surroundings, open fireplace and topsy turvy rooms, lovely atmosphere. Limited access for disabled as stairs very steep and low ceilings

“The afternoon tea was disappointing and over-priced.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

My mother, sister and I attended the hotel for afternoon tea in July 2014.
On arrival we had to wait a long time to be seated and we put on a table by the door which was used frequently and during the experience the staff were rearranging the furniture around us which was noisy and off-putting.
The service was poor, other than bring offered a tea refill we weren't visited by any staff.
On advertising the menu was described as including 'dainty cakes', in reality there was two very large slabs of carrot cake, one huge slice of walnut cake and 3 small, half melted cakes - all of which were cheap and disappointing. This theme carried on with the scones.
The sandwiches were acceptable! The portion for 3 people was also very measley.
All this was charged at £18 which for what we received was very disappointing. We would not recommend this hotel for afternoon tea.

“Tapas”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

We were recently recommended to visit The White Horse pub in Hertford. Visiting on a Thursday evening which is Tapas night. On arrival we were given a very warm welcome by the two young ladies behind the bar, and proceeded to study the specialist menu. The choice was extremely mouth watering with a good selection. Example gambas piri piri, seafood salad, patas bravas and so on. I have to say the food was delicious as well as authentic.
The food, choice of drinks and friendly staff are well worth a visit.

“Try this unpretentious little gem!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014

Advertised as being "The best ale house in Hertford" it most certainly is, closely followed by The Old Cross Tavern. It offers really good, well-kept ales, a tremendous selection of fruit wines and even delicious home-made pork pies [a tad expensive at £1.65 each, but tasty!].
Paul is the really wonderful, friendly landlord who has restored the house's reputation to its former glory. In winter, an open log fire bids you welcome, on some week nights there are musicians to entertain, and a tapas night too that fills many a table.
Being well patronised by discerning locals, speaks volumes!
Well worth a visit at any time!

“Good value pub and accommodation ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014 via mobile

Stayed here 5 times over the last 6 months. The staff always provide a warm welcome. Had a fantastic curry on one visit. A good breakfast spread. The rooms are a good size although some of the decor is a bit dated.
