“St Albans Stay”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

Hotel is situated in the heart of St Albans. The staff are friendly and the rooms are clean and modern. Breakfast is very nice and has everything you require. Car parking at the hotel is tight but there are two other parking sites you can use. In all, I would happily go back and recommend this hotel to all users, both pleasure and commercial. 12 noon checkout also an added bonus.

Stayed on a weekend city break and found the location to be perfect, right opposite the cathedral, one minutes walk from the city centre and market. Clean and comfortable although our room (116) needed a little tlc-two lights not working and trim missing from shower/bath control. Minor things that did not detract from our stay, just a niggle. Good in room facilities, free parking a plus, staff effecient. Blurb says the bar does cocktails, but they don't. Didn't have breakfast, went elsewhere on tastecard for less.

Found this hotel trawling through Trip Advisor. Previous good comments led me here. It's a small and honest enough hotel if a little dismal with its lower ground floor rooms. Mine looked up to a wall that was the throwing off point for cigarettes from the pub car park next door. Everything clean, tidy, quiet. Staff pleasant and helpful. ground floor bar bright and welcoming. Just a bit dismal downstairs.

Room Tip: Go high up and face away from the pub car park next door.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay.

Unfortunately due to the location of the hotel and being a grade 2 listed building we are unable to have more bedrooms on a higher level and thus we have ground floor bedrooms. On your next visit you can request a room on the higher and will endeavour to meet your request.

I am pleased that you enjoyed our bar facilities and the staff were friendly and helpful.

We look forward to welcoming you back to St Albans in the near future

Rooms are contemporary, clean and comfortable and all staff were really helpful and friendly. There was no A/C though - although not an issue for my stay it could impact in hot weather?? Breakfast was lovely. Breakfast can also be taken in your room if preferred (albeit a more limited selection). Although there is no restaurant serving evening meals as such, there is a Cafe Rouge next door. However, room service is available from the Cafe Rouge in room menu (or you could eat it in the bar downstairs). The room service was quick and the food of a good quality. This hotel offers free parking for all guests - although not necessarily on site. The on site car park only has enough room for 6 or so cars. However, pull into the car park (just off the lane that runs down the side of the hotel) and even if it's full just stop here whilst you go into the hotel to be issued with a parking permit and staff will give you directions to the nearest available car park (none of the car parks used are far from the hotel). Another good point about the car parking arrangements is that even on the day of checkout you can leave your car parked free of charge until about 5.30pm, which was great for me as I was attending a meeting all day.
All in all I was impressed and would have no hesitation staying here again. In fact, although I was here for business on this occasion, I visit London with family a few times a year and would consider staying here instead (lot cheaper than London) and then get the train into London - it only takes 20-30mins

Sadly we didn't get to stay at this hotel - arrived at night after a 2 hour drive on the M25 to hear they'd overbooked - unimpressed!

That said, the customer service in handling this by the front desk staff was good. They quickly booked us into another hotel (not in the town centre, but further out from town, which wasn't ideal as we needed to be in the centre), paid the difference in the cost of the hotel and arranged and paid for all of our required taxis in and out of town from the new hotel they booked us into as it was further out of town. Well done to the Clarion for dealing with the mess-up so well - but a shame it happened in the first place.

A nice 19th century building has been converted to a hotel. The ground floor still has the atmosphere of what the building must have been like but at the same time feels light and airy due to all the light marmer.

Checkin was very warm and thorough. The areas with the rooms look a lot more modern with carpets and light and warm coloured woods. I got a twin bed room with a nice sized bathroom with a bad/shower combo. Room feels substantial in size and has all the usual comforts like a kettle, ironing board and a fan for warmer days.

There is wifi troughout the hotel and quick enough for a skype video call.

The bar is supposed to never close as long as there are customers. There's some common beers on tap as well and a nice selection of bottled beers.

Restaurant/breakfast room also has the nostalgic feel to it with a good English selection of dishes.Everything is fresh and in ample supply.

Parking is indeed a challenge, there's a few places behind the cafe next to the hotel and a lot more in the overflow parking 5 minutes walking from the hotel. Just let them know you need a space and they will respond with an email with instructions.

What made this hotel for me was the staff. I have not met a single member of staff who did not do his or her very best to make each guest feel welcome. Some other more luxurious hotels also try this and end up with a fake experience. There was nothing fake about this crew.!

Is there room for improvement? Well of course. I'd like to see some crusty bread for breakfast instead of just the standard toastable sliced loaf. Also the parking instructions could do with an overhaul. Get the information on a properly printed card or flyer instead of a map that suffers from being copied 30 times. Still these are minor details in an otherwise very fine hotel experience. I would gladly stay here again! This is a true home away from home which you don't find all that often in this country.

I always stay here when I visit my family in St. Albans. The location is excellent, the rooms spacious and clean, the staff very friendly and helpful, once you engage with them. But note, YOU have to engage with THEM. That has improved very much recently. Much appreciate ironing facilities in the room. In an unseasonably cold end of May found my room a bit shivery, and heating boost apparatus a bit complicated.to the point where you give up. But certainly would come back time and time again.

Breakfast worthy enough - but avoid the scrambled eggs! And leave instructions as to how to operate extra heating! But basically, very satisfied.

Room Tip: All quiet, but some colder than others. East facing rooms great for dawn but cold at the end of the...

Thank you for your recent review.

We do not have an automatic timer for heating, all heating is control in the room, I will ensure that more information is given at check in by the Front Office team regarding the use of the heaters.

We do offer additional egg items on request, poached, boiled or fried if scramble are not to your liking.

I am happy that you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit.
