“Excellent hotel and spa”
Reviewed 21 April 2013

We had never been to the area of St Alban's and booked a room at Sopwell House through Booking.com. We booked an Executive Room which, according to the Booking.com website, offered a separate sitting area. On arrival we found this was a misrepresentation, the website described an Executive Suite which differed from the Executive Room reserved by the hotel. Because of the misunderstanding the hotel upgraded us to an Executive Suite at no extra cost. We were warned that this had not been refurbished but we could not fault the room - a separate sitting area and a four-poster bed. The room was well-decorated, clean and quiet. However, it was approached down a corridor which was rather dark and dingy and would benfit from redecoration.
The hotel boasts a well-appointed spa and fitness centre. There are ample, comfortable public sitting areas. There are two restaurants - a brasserie and a more formal restaurant. We had dinner in the restaurant and found the choice, preparation and presentation of the food to be excellent. Breakfast was served in the brasserie. It was a self-service buffet which offered a wide choice of well-cooked food which was frequently renewed. However, there was no black pudding!
The hotel is also a conference centre and hosts weddings and on arrival we found the space for car-parking at a premium. However, the function rooms are separate and the busyness in those areas was not evident in the hotel.
The staff in the hotel were outstanding - always pleasant and helpful - the duty manager, receptionists, porters, waiters and waitresses and staff in the spa. We would strongly recommend this hotel.

The hotel is pleasant enough, staff all very nice and helpful, bar is very expensive, the afternoon teas are also on the pricey side.

In the literature, the hotel proudly tell you about the ' hall of fame ' , which is football and rugby shirts signed by the various teams that have stayed in the hotel over the years, go and have a look they say !, FYI - Its not there anymore, they have all been taken down.

Sunday morning breakfast was very hectic and busy, with little staff running around like headless chickens, they tried, but could have had at least 3 or 4 more waiters / waitress staff to ease the load and ensure everything ran smoothly.

On the positive side, the location is lovely and is easy to get into St Albans where there are some nice pubs and restaurants.

I was a little disappointed by the overall stay, and would unfortunately look elsewhere should I need to stay in this area again.

Room Tip: Avoid room 165 or any numbers around that, the room although 4 poster bed, is next to some kind of p...

We stayed at Sopwell for our first wedding anniversary on a Lazy Sunday Spa Break. We booked at short notice and booked the suite with a Balcony. The building is gorgeous! The staff efficient, professional and friendly. The grand piano was being played upon our arrival and the whole stay including treatments and food was fantastic. The small things that cropped up such an incident with an ant, was handled quickly. We mentioned a couple of small things on departure such as a crisp packet under our bed, broken bathroom lock and some plaster dust on our coats for example and the receptionist couldn't apologise enough. Cocktails were lovely and the feel of the hotel was exceptional. The treatments we had were great and we would have had more if there had been availability so I advise you to book early! I have a nut allergy and staff were very accommodating and friendly when there was food I couldn't have. Breakfast was nice but didn't have the 4* feel everything else had as it was self service which is still lovely but I couldn't help but feel table service would have been a little more special for the cooked items at least. Overall, fantastic and we would love to go back!

Arrived for spa overnight stay.Helpful but confused staff at the reception desk.Booked for a room of three which wasn't available due to confusion with the rest of the party.(9 of us together for the weekend 6 had checked in already) only a doulbe room available for 2. one of us would have to stay on our own!!On insistence we were given a room in the mews which was so run down and grubby. There was a most disturbing painting on the wall which I can't imagine anyone finding a pleasure to look at.We were in room 9.
We were given a put up bed as the third bed which was fine but I couldn't understand why they couldn't have put one into our original double room.
It took an hour of our relaxing spa time to organise this!
When enquiring to arrangements for the spa we were told by the hotel reception staff that the spa is run separately and they don't get involved in their department!
We wandered over to the spa to find out treatments were due in 5 mins so we had better hurry and get changed!
Thankfully Louise my therapist was great and I was able to relax quickly dispite a stressful start to the day!!
My treatments were excellent.
Dinner was pleasant but the Brassiere was so busy we waited 20 mins to be served for a drink and then a further 20mins for the wine.I think they were understaffed as the evening progressed and people left the service improved.
The rest of the stay was enjoyable and my friend enjoyed her surprise birthday spa.
I have been to sopwell many time for Spa days but feel anxious to return again after this experience.I felt as we were on a spa offer we were 2nd class citizens!!
Hopefully Sopwell were just having a bad weekend!!!

This hotel is a huge disappointment. Our room was dirty. Dust all over the place, so much that you could wipe your finger through it and worst of all... Two toenails on the carpet next to the bed!!! Quite clearly not been cleaned properly at all!

We also ordered room service breakfast which is £22 per person. It was cold, some of the order was not on ge plate and we were brought a raw boiled egg! For £22 this was an absolute disgrace.

The spa however was fantastic. The therapists were amazing and th treatments were well worth it.

Would not recommend this hotel to anybody.

I have been to Sopwell House Hotel many times, in fact I tend to take various family members and friends there for a treat, be it afternoon tea or a bite to eat in the evening in the brasserie or for spa treatments.
We will always have a drink in the cocktail or terrace bar and sometimes will sit in the library. I have to say the standard of cleanliness in those areas is second to none, I always feel comfortable knowing I am in a well looked after environment.
The toilets and public areas are a real delight, and I always look forward to spending time at the hotel.

From the moment we arrived for our spa break, we felt relaxed and welcome. The reception staff at check in and check out (Tanya) were friendly and efficient and the concierge showed us to our room which was well decorated, clean and quiet with crisp bedlinen. Our only criticism of the room was that the shower ran out of hot water after one shower. However, nothing could diminish the overall feeling of being in a very well-run and top quality hotel - Sopwell House is many levels above similarly priced 'chain' hotels. The food in the Brasserie is imaginative and well presented: the staff in all areas are friendly, courteous and efficient. Special mention must be made of the hotel's spa - again, this spa is of a much higher standard than others in similar sized hotels. The decor is good, the atmosphere is restful and pleasant, the staff are professional and charming. The spa's deputy manager, Nicola, was particularly welcoming, knowledgeable and professional and the therapist I had for my treatments, Sarah, was charming. The spa break package is excellent value for money and we are already planning our next trip.
