Thank you for your review and I am delighted to hear that you were able to enjoy the afternoon with us recently, albeit unexpectedly.

We look forward to seeing you again in 2014 for dinner with your daughters when we will have launched our new and improved A la carte and Lake menus.

This hotel is a wonderful find, just a short walk from the hustle bustle of St Albans' historic town centre; yet it could be a million miles away. It is so tranquil.

The setting is magnificent, with glorious landscaped gardens and a stunning lake. In the summer months, tea on the terrace, or at the lakeside is a real treat.

The hotel is finely appointed, with comfortable sitting rooms furnished in period style. There is an excellent restaurant too, with menus to suit a wide range of tastes.

The bedrooms are bright and extremely well appointed, as are the bathrooms. The housekeeping is faultless too.

The staff are professional, helpful
and attentive and nothing is too much trouble. Guests really are made to feel at home here.

In short, this is one hotel I would happily recommend to anyone.

Great place to host a function, or for a wedding.

We often visit St Michael's Manor and really like it, but the Christmas tea was no more than acceptable. Service was very slow and desultory: one menu to pass around six people, seemingly no special Christmas fare, an age for a pot of tea to arrive and then ages before the sandwiches. It all seemed rather low rent service (we concluded the waiter was too busy smoking somewhere). It ought to have been good value at c£17 each but they charge no less than c£6 per person to bring extra sandwiches! This would be all right if we were greedy but the initial plates offered nowhere near enough to keep me happy. Stingy! The scones were superb, however. Why do hotels offer sticky, tiny French patisserie items instead of proper English cakes - and this is a traditional English hotel at Christmas! Not a mince pie or piece of Christmas cake, Victoria sponge or other traditional cakes in sight. Very disappointing and frankly low rent. We would dine here again (the setting is lovely) but certainly not go for tea.

Thank you for your review and I am sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations on your most recent visit after having enjoyed your previous visits. We pride ourselves on our excellent service and I will certainly raise these issues regarding your service with the team.

After careful consideration and research with our many guests we recently upgraded our cake selection to provide a more modern approach with improved techniques and flavours. This has proved extremely popular however we are sorry that it didn’t meet your particular approval, except for the scones.

We look forward to having the opportunity of restoring your confidence in us and please do not hesitate to contact me directly to make any reservations. (rmarrett@stmichaelsmanor.com)

I am going to try to not be biased here as this was my wedding! Everything about St Michaels was perfect. The staff were beyond amazing. The venue itself oozes understated class. The rooms were all different but all beautiful in their own way and spotless. The food was great and that was the one thing we were worried about as we chose a vegetarian started and a fish main - Everyone loved it though!

We got married on December 14th and the Christmas decorations they had up were perfect. We could not fault one thing about the hotel inside or out!

The whole day went exactly according to plan thanks to the amazing team at St Michaels.

A special shout out has to be given to Shaun. The bloke is incredible! If I were not getting married to the most beautifully stunning girl in the world that day I would of married him!! Did everything in his power to make the day as smooth as possible. If he wasn't fixing our ties and pinning our button holes perfectly he was up a ladder helping the florist with flowers or greeting guests with impeccable manners. What ever St Michaels are paying this man. IT'S NOT ENOUGH!

Saying that all staff were excellent throughout from barmen to management!

If you get married here, you will NOT be disappointed.

Magical day in every single way

Room Tip: Every room is individual. The newer rooms on the side of the Orangery are great with subtle oriental...

A really excellent hotel, the staff were unbelievable helpful, nothing too much trouble. Room was good size for the price with a great bathroom. The bar could have had wider choice of champagne, but had plenty of whiskey. The breakfast is brilliant, the best I have had for sometime, all cooked fresh, no hot buffet here. My only criticism would be that the whole place was very hot .

I'm not accustomed to staying in fancy hotels, hostels are my usual hangouts, so my perspective is likely somewhat skewed. Room was very nice with fantastic views over the very nice gardens and lake. Staff were helpful and welcoming. Rooms were large but cosy, bathrooms spotless and kitted out well. Room service for breakfast is also something I'm not used to, but was a very nice meal and very prompt. Also in a very nice area not far away from the high street or station.

We stayed at St Michael's Manor hotel for a night at the end of November. Excellent service and a most enjoyable stay. Our room was on the second floor with views over the lake and gardens. The bathroom was small but spotlessly clean as was the bedroom. There is no lift so getting to the second floor means you need to be fit. We dined in the restaurant and my husband's need for a gluten and lactose free diet was catered for with no difficulty. Excellent location a short walk from the impressive cathedral and town. Lots of history. We look forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: First floor with view of lake and garden.

Thank you for finding us and for your complimentary review. The bedroom you mentioned is one of our most popular, especially for the views, which are almost as "breathtaking" as the stairs!

We'd love to fit a lift but unfortunately we'd have great difficulty with planning permission since this 16th century building has a preservation order on it (Grade II* listing). In some ways this makes the hotel a challenge to keep updated, but at the same time adds to its charm.

We hope to see you back in the future.
