Description: A royally good pub in St Albans.Welcome to The King Harry, a traditional town pub in St Albans - and the only place where your five-a-day is served up with such style. From our Belgian strawberry beer and blimmin' great Bloody Marys to chef's fresh, seasonal specials and glorious Sunday roasts, you can enjoy an abundance of pubby goodness within these historic walls. I qualify my title because of the question asked before giving it....Was this one of the best meals I've ever had in a restaurant and I had to put no because this isn't really a restaurant. However, what it is, so far as I could see today, was a great old pub that was serving some really, really good food. A pretty random find that turned out very much in our favour on a windy, rainy trip back from a great weekend, with this Sunday lunch rounding it off to a tee. Didn't have starter, not because they weren't any good but because we had spotted a dessert that sounded rich and delicious...but more of that in a sec. 2 roast pork, 2 roast beef with some cauliflower cheese on the side, cooked really nicely, good portions and really good cauliflower cheese with a nice sauce that was thick but not claggy, all went down a treat with very nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and an interesting fruit beer......could taste strawberry but still definitely beer. A short but not too long interval and then it was bring on the dessert....4 salted caramel & chocolate tarts with clotted cream were delivered to our table and a very appreciative silence broken only with sounds normally found in a certain shampoo ad! Delicious, not too big a portion, not too sweet and not so much cream that it overwhelmed the plate and took away the rich flavour. What can I say, we all enjoyed a terrific lunch, paid a fair price, not cheap but in no way left feeling overcharged, but definitely left feeling satisfied and full.
This is a pub that manages to feel like your local even when you don't live there, very welcoming and inviting in family, friends, couples and also their dogs. We saw and admired numerous well behaved and variable size dogs and it's amazing how much they make for a warmer atmosphere and change the feel from restaurant wannabe to good, olde-worlde pub of the traditional real variety rather fake version that you find so commonly around today. Would be more than happy to go back and try again, and while I might have a different first course, I'm still leaving room for dessert!!

Our second visit for a Sunday lunch in the last few months. Ordered 2 Sunday roast dinners and 2 children's meals. Most of the vegetables appeared processed and cooked from frozen. Freshly prepared leeks and cauliflower was not fresh and was poorly prepared. Kids meals were just about acceptable, but would expect fish fingers and chips to be o.k.
The service from all in the pub/restaurant lacked any sense of passion for the business they were in. Whilst no one was unpleasant, no one seemed to be enjoying their work, or engaging with any of their customers.
A shame, because a nice spot, but needless to say we won't be going back again.
