We visited Miller & Carter Wheathampstead (aka The Bull) for lunch on a hot Saturday; most of the restaurant was empty. We decided to set inside with a table overlooking the river Lea (there looked to be extensive seating outside for eating / drinking). The River Lea (named after its source at Leagrave, near Luton) eventually becomes the River Lee which runs through the Olympic park before entering the Thames as Bow Creek.

The steaks were good and the side order of vegetable were cooked perfectly. The chips had been made from unpeeled potatoes.

Deserts were a slight let down. Cups for tea / coffee were dirty and the advertised little cake with hot drinks did not materialise.

My husband had his stag do here in their function room upstairs. The landlady and the staff were so accommodating and did everything they could to make sure he had a great evening - including helping to organise the food and bringing in their own TV from home to set up a gaming marathon! Service wasabsolutely impeccable on the night and he couldn't have asked for more. The resident ale is Black Sheep and is well kept - my husband assures me that Black Sheep is the best pint you can have! Dogs are welcome, and this adds to a very traditional family atmosphere of a local pub. In the summer, they hold a good BBQ outside and live music is always a welcome distraction throughout the year.

Have eaten here many times, service is slow on ocassions but you can live with that. The food is great- fab steaks- cooked to perfection and delicious. Portion size has decreased over the years- the onion loaf being a mere spoonful now- which is a shame as the cost of a meal for 4 with drinks has gone over the £120 mark now.

I have been here maybe a dozen times and in the day its great value and can't be knocked , Calamare £3.5 and a small steak for a tenner and you have had a great lunch. In the evening however whilst the steak is not the very very best it is pretty darn good . How ever the weird sides like the lettuce wedge ?? And the fries which are very bulk catering let it down slightly.

The service is very Beefeater old school , I wonder if when it changed to Miller and Carter they kep them on.

I.e older slower or random People. The service you could call relaxed or possibly a bit sluggish. I have has to wait and wait for drinks and then wait for mains and then waiting for deserts , more waiting for a coffee then waiting for the bill and then more waiting while they get the card machine.

Some young or not to be ageist some older but "on it "waiting staff are really needed.

It feels too Harvester or Beefeater and at £40 for chateaubriand plus sides you can hit London for that and everything would be razor sharp.

The wine list is ok, twice the white had not be chilled enough .

I would used this for the daytime menu but think about somewhere else for the evening.
