“Very interesting”

St Albans South Signal Box

I went as part of a group of twenty on a specially arranged visit one evening last year. The box itself has been very well restored and in the grounds there are various artefacts such as signals that are controlled as part of a demonstration of how things worked when it was in operation.

The experience becomes more authentic when in the box itself as trains are continually rushing by and the original signal frame, points levers and equipment to liaise with other signal boxes are demonstrated.

Our hosts for the evening were very well informed and very keen volunteers and we all enjoyed the experience very much. If you are interested in trains, this is for you!

Visited on a whim and found it very informative. Got to use some levers and work a signal in the garden. Discovered it once controlled explosive charges to derail run away trains!

St Albans is one of those special places you find in life - historically important, socially superior and full of the kind of spunk that makes Britain great. So it's of no surprise that it should have a truly wonderful signal box. The rail line is something of a disaster, run by the woefully inept First company, so it's easy to approach the City in a less than triumphant mood. However, no matter how late/crowded/malfunctioning your train is, your mood will instantly lift when the fine Cathedral appears on the horizon, and, seconds later, everything will suddenly be gravy when the signal box appears. It's everything you could wish for in a signal box and I'm so glad that it was so beautifully renovated a few years back so that all who pass through can enjoy it. Gone are the stale urine smells and illiterate graffiti (presumably done by people from Luton - Albanians generally have a superior grasp of grammar), replaced by fresh paint and the positive vibe of the village green preservation society. Don't miss out on seeing this stunning historical building - bring the children, bring your neighbours, bring the old couple on the corner - St Albans signal box is a joy to behold and should be loved by all.
