Very good lunch deal. Had two courses here with my mother after a trip round the lovely St. Albans Cathedral. We both started with beetroot, lentil and goat cheese salad, which was delicious. The lentils and most of the goat cheese were creamed together and served with the beetroot on top and served with a little decorative mustard mayonnaise around the edge of the plate - we were so impressed by this dish that the waiter kindly asked if we would like the recipe. Brilliant! I followed this with Guinea fowl confit, peas, mash and broad beans with a lovely jus and that was very good. My mothers traditional tart flambé was not so successful. It was more like a very dry pizza with onion, gruyere and bacon sparsely covering a not very crisp pastry base - so somewhat disappointing, but I was able to share some of my food so not a disaster. We decided to share a dessert which was baked apple, calvados and vanilla ice cream and though seemingly simple delivered a sauce with complimented the apple which in the core was stuffed with sultanas. We took advantage of the offer of a glass of house wine each for £2.50 and free tap water. The Lunch deal was only £11.50 for 2 courses and £13.95 for three. Very worthwhile booking a table here.
