Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: Built between 1403 and 1412, the Clock Tower is the only medieval town belfry in England and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The tower with its fine bell has survived over 600 years of use. The Clock Tower was first and foremost a political statement. The townspeople used it to assert their freedom, power and wealth in the face of the premier Benedictine Abbey of England (now St Albans Cathedral). The Clock Tower is generally open from Easter (Good Friday) to the end of September, every Saturday and Sunday and Bank Holiday, between approximately 10.30am and 5pm. Last admission 4.45pm. It is also sometimes open on other special occasions like Heritage Open Days (September), the Food & Drink Festival (September) and the Christmas Lights switch-on (December). Admission: Adults: £1. Children: free. Unfortunately the Clock Tower is not wheelchair or buggy accessible or for those who experience claustrophobia. The climb up to the top is via 93 very narrow and steep steps.

Interesting little gem in the centre of St. Albans... It is like a time travel capsule with amazing views at the top!

The clock tower is great value for money, only £1 to go to the top and view the surrounding city. My husband and son enjoyed the climb up and the view, unfortunately I only got half way and claustrophobia got me so I came down again. Sat and chatted to the staff which was nice. Would love to give it another go, but would need to go when no one else is on the stairs!!

This is quite an attraction of St. Albans. My husband and I lived just across the street from the clock tower. Walked all the way to the top and could see all of town center and beyond. I highly recommend touring the clock tower and reading about it's history.

What a fascinating ancient monument hidden away in the centre of St Albans. Although I've known the city for many years, I never knew this tower existed until exploring. It is apparently one of the oldest remaining working clock towers left in Britain.

Mind your head on the way up - and down. It is well worth the £1 or so as a historic relic which should certainly be preserved.

Just enjoy.

Only a quid to get in, and an intriguing steep climb to the top, so well worth the time to look. Good views of the surrounding countryside and not much else. Quaint and vaguely interesting. We took Aussie tourists up there.
