Owner description: St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago.The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

“Catholics Do It Better”

This is a second rate cathedral that has been ruined by renovations. It is currently debased by awful modern art works. See York Minster and Lichfield and Winchester first.

“Beautiful and well maintained”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2014

The Cathedral is beautiful. Has a large park outside the church making it ideal for picnic. On the way you can also see the St Alban clock house. On Wednesday's you can also visit the local market.
Lot of places to eat and shop near by.

“Peaceful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2014

The Abbey (as it's more commonly known as locally) is a peaceful place to visit or just enter to sit and contemplate or pray. This may sound obvious but this is not true of all such places. Here you can slip in (without charge) and while away an hour or so away from the hustle of a busy working/shopping city.

“An obvious place to visit if in the area.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014

I must declare that I am not a great lover of cathedrals or churches, but I do admire the actual structures and architecture involved. The cathedral is unusual in that sections of it are built in roman brick which were utilised from the nearby ruins. The grounds are attractive and give the building a nice setting. I would put the interior in the average category, there is a nice modern collage/tapestry depicting the history of the cathedral, which is informative.
If you are visiting the area, then this place is an obvious "to do" for an hour or so.
