Visited recently for dinner. There was a wide range of food available on the menu as well as a specials board.
The portions were very generous and the food was very tasty (recommend the slow cooked rib of beef with bbq sauce)
The service was quick and the food was lovely and hot.
Only fault I can think of is that the drinks menu only seemed to have alcoholic drinks listed so you had to go to the bar to see what soft drinks were available but that wasn't really a problem.
Would visit again if I'm in the area.
Recommended.

A recent management change took place and with no notice whatsoever the Sunday night quiz was cancelled. After speaking to the Regional Manager she explained that it upset the dinners in the pub. It would seem from other reviews that the management are capable of upsetting dinners with out the aid of a quiz. Sadly this pub used to have the BEST Sunday Quiz in St Albans - It has NEVER had the best food in St Albans so if was to concentrate on what it does best it would be running a decent Sunday Quiz not peddling mediocre pub grub. A classic case of layers and layers of poor management in large pub companies. No wonder so many pubs are closing if they all have management as poor and un imaginative as that that exists at The King William St Albans. THIS IS A PUB THAT DOES NOTHING WELL AND MANY THINGS VERY BADLY INDEED.

Went here for a family meal. We found a table and had to order food at the bar. Food was good value for money, a 2 course meal and were good size portions. All off our meals were large, presented well on the plate and had a home cooked feel about them, the steak and tart was beautiful with large chunks of steak in a lovely gravy topped with the lightest pastry I ve ever tasted. The whole family enjoyed their meal and we would definitely be returning.

Been here a few times this year and this is the 3rd management we have seen clearly the end of the barrel now, rushing round getting nothing done, unclear wether it's table service or snack and grab robotic unfriendly foreign staff who rush through serving you as if your a hinderance food was average and not worth the wait and feeling of being an inconvenience, on previous visit the staff were friendly although a little rushed but all made effort, new guys were there even though only there temporary plus a couple of old favourite staff, Kate and Greg was the star if your ever in need of great service in a dour restaurant, also new guy Olly was great making all our family feel welcome. But the policy seems to be no family diners welcome, which is fine if you say that but don't treat us as lepers or an inconvenience, and get management with a personality please!!!!

We have eaten at this pub a few times. First 18 months ago with good service and value. Since then we have been there 3 times - 2 times with the food being awful, the last time we walked out within 5 minutes of being seated. We booked the table and upon arrival there was no-one visibly directing customers what to do. We asked what appeared to be the waiter if we should wait or sit. He grunted at us to sit. We sat and then asked for menus and got another grunt. Our 20 month old son started to make some noise which we were trying to control and the waiter walked over and said, without a grunt, to our 20 month old son "you cannot make that terrible noise and you will have to stop it". I asked the waiter if he thought that would work and he said "he has to stop, I cannot have that racket in here for the other customers". We understood the problem and the need to stop the noise but the way he spoke to us was unacceptable. My guess is that he did not want families with children under 14. So we promptly decided to leave and wanted to complain to the manager on the way out. However, it turns out the old grumpy waiter was the manager... Warning to St Albans parents, 3 out of 4 times this place was terrible and the manager clearly doesn’t want young families dining there.
