“The better hostel in Canterbury”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

Came here from the other hostel in town. Interior is very nice looking, though it seems to carry a religious theme which I didn't appreciate. The female dorm room is on the top floor which many stairs up, so be warned. It has a sink in the room, 2 lockers (tho there's 4 beds) and mirrors (bring your own lock). Radiator works well. Seems silly to have bed lights if they're going to take a week to fix. I wish I could say the place is quiet, but the fact is, it's a family hostel and this is England. Quite irritating is how the room doors slam shut because of the catch mechanism on it. Whoever thought that one up had never stayed in a hotel. Kitchen is very nice, tho obsessively hygenic and safety ridden. Showers are good. :) Cleaning doesn't include the carpet or window sill, etc. The one thing I really, really didn't like is that the price doesn't inc. internet and if you want that, you can either pay way too much for 24 hours or way too much for 20 minutes. The front desk didn't know how their system works, so be warned that the 20 minutes you purchase can not be used at different intervals - it's either all at once or you lose any time you don't use! Horrible system for a hostel (especially the registration method) and it's just a money-making scheme for YHA. There's a college down the road that maybe you can get an open line at. And if you're tight on money, the Tesco express down the road discounts a lot of perishables daily, usually in the morning. Sometimes there are some really great deals.

Thank you very much for your valued feedback, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay in our Hostel. The Hostel has been recently refurbished, restoring many of our original Victorian Gothic Villa features, as is typical to this area – we are sorry if you interpreted these to represent a religious theme as this certainly wasn’t the intention. We have different options for internet access in the Hostel and we will make the messaging clearer for those using it, one of the many benefits of being a YHA member is access to free WIFI. We appreciate your comments on the cleanliness of the building and hope you can stay again with us in the future. Best wishes, Niki

Canterbury YHA is in an interesting old mansion on the Dover road, just outside Canterbury. It has recently been refurbished to a high standard (I understand over £500,000 was spent). Rooms are 4-6 person side with comfortable bunk beds. Some have en-suite shower rooms. Beds are made up for you now with luxurious duvets and comfortable pillows. The hostel is clean and fresh. The new showers work extremely well. The whole building is maintained well and very clean. The members kitchen allows self catering and is adequately equipped (although a bit of a struggle for group catering as the pans are domestic sized - large catering pans are available if you ask). The refurbished lounge is very comfortable with new furniture. Reception staff are very helpful. Cooked breakfast was excellent. A great experience - as good as most hotels in many respects, perfect for groups. Thanks to the team at Canterbury YHA we had a very successful overnight stay,

When visiting the scene of Murder at the Cathedral why not stay overnight at the Y.H.A. situated in the beautiful Kent countryside A twenty minute walk from the coach and railway station is the hostel in an old house full of character. There is a large car park to the front of the building and gardens to the rear.

The reception area is located at the top of a flight of steps meaning it is not wheelchair accessible. The hostel does not have a lift only stairs which is not good for carrying heavy luggage. The staff on reception are friendly and helpful. Alcohol, soft drinks and food can be purchased from reception

There is a large television room to the rear of the hostel. Dormatories consist of bunk beds in six bedded rooms which are spacious and airy. Bathrooms are located on the corridors, there are no en-suite facilities. Food can be purchased from a nearby shop and consumed in the kitchen.

Wifi is accessible through the use of Global Cards which can also be used to make international calls, members have the privilege of free Wi-Fi.

7-10 Advantages:-
Rooms spacious and airy
Television
Grounds

Disadvantages:-
Quite a walk from the coach station
No lift
No en-suite facilities

Room Tip: Try not to carry heavy luggage as there are many stairs but no lift Use the showers out of peak hou...

Thank you very much for your kind feedback. We do have 8 out of 15 ensuite rooms available and 2-beds and 4-beds can be hired privately. With notice we can allocate lower bedrooms for dormitory users. We are dissapointed that your rating is not higher and hope to see you again so that we can work to improve this. Kind regards, Niki

The staff were friendly and helpful. Very clean rooms, kitchen, toilets and wash rooms. All newly refurbished. The only problem I had was the "Hearty breakfast" priced at £4.99 consisted of 1 slice of bacon, 1 sausage, 2 shrivelled fried mushrooms, 1 hash brown and about 10 baked beans!! For that price that is awful they weren't ready till 7.45 either when they said 7.30 on the brochure. Apart from that very friendly, pleasant stay. Would return but go somewhere else for breakfast.

The Canterbury youth hostel is situated a good 15 minute walk from the centre of town. The building is old so the floors creak and squeak which means that it is not easy to get a good night's sleep for those wanting to retire early. The quadruple room we stayed in was very small and cramped and although the beds were fine and the decor in good condition, we could only look at the stay as simply a place to sleep. The breakfast was disappointing: overlooked bacon, cardboard sausage and micro waved scrambled egg and hardly any fruit to speak of. I would look for an alternative for Canterbury next time.

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floor facing the back of the property

We stayed at the Y H A on friday 28th June, the room was very clean and tidy, bathroom and toilet facilities was excellent, We were a party of 6 men, and all were accommodated with ease, The beds were comfortable, The receptionist was very obliging, As we had to be up at 5am for the channel tunnel crossing, very little sleep was had, If I was to stay in Canterbury I would certainly look at staying at the Y H A

Thank you for your valued feedback. I have shared your impressions of breakfast with our catering team and am sorry you did not find it to be to our standards on this occassion - a 7 item hot cooked breakfast, with fruit, yoghurt, cereals, hot drinks, fruit juices, croissants, rolls and preserves. Please do let me know personally should you stay here again. I am pleased that you found our staff to be helpful and friendly. We hope to see you again. Happy travels! Niki Reynolds - Manager.

On a recent vacation to the UK, we stayed at 3 different YHAs and found this one to be pretty average. It was about a 15 minute walk from the CBE train station and closer to 25 or 30 to CBW. It was about 15 min walk to the Cathedral area. It is not very close to any pubs, restaurants or other shopping. It was quite clean. As with all other YHAs, it costs extra for towels and WiFi. The lounge area was nice and we liked being able to purchase drinks. Main complaint is that they lock doors in the late morning and do not allow check in until 4pm. There are lockers in the basement that travelers can put their bags in until check in but we still found this to be quite a late hour.

Thank you for your feedback. It is dissapointing to see you found our location inconvenient or unexpected - we are 1 mile from the Centre but the West station is a little further on the other side of town. Reception is open from 3-11pm daily with a day access area with kitchen, tv and bathroom facilities for early arrivals. I am pleased you enjoyed our social space in the evening. We hope to see you again. Happy Travels! Niki Reynolds - Manager
