“Good value but needs work”
Reviewed 5 February 2011

Positives
Excellent price, plenty of parking, spot on location, nice welcome/service and a decent breakfast.

Negatives
Only one - the decor in the room was very tired and dated (inc curtains, carpet etc) and the bathroom could do with a refit.

Nice B&B, nothing a bit of TLC wouldn't sort!

Stayed for one night in November. On the positive side, the location is good. There is free car parking and the outside of the house is impressive. Rooms were very clean, owners friendly and breakfast was good.
It's let down by being stuck in an 80's decorative hell. It's a long time since I've seen rag rolled walls with a floral border in peach! The room we had was very small for a double, although the bathroom was a good size. Alas having a big bathroom with only a shower and no bath was a waste of space. The paint was peeling on the radiators and the carpet was frayed in many places. It has a small portable TV stuck on the wall with just the four channels. Our wardrobe was open plan, it was all very basic.
Maybe we were unlucky and some other rooms have been refurbished, but having stayed at other B&B's charging the same rates, this was not value for money.

Thank you for your feedback, which is most appreciated. I'm glad you found the staff friendly, the room clean and breakfast good. I agree that the rooms are dated and in need of updating but having been here less than a year we've only just been able to start with the refurbishment, which is now underway.

Booked at the last minute for my son to stay as he had no accomodation in Canterbury and was attending University of Kent. We needed somewhere affordable and close to the campus if possible and feel that we were very lucky to get a room. Everywhere else was either full or way too expensive. My son was in a very difficult situation, attending uni and looking for longer term accomodation but found this B & B a godsend, friendly staff from booking through to end of stay, and he enjoyed the full English breakfast very much.

I recently had a lovely experience at this tudor style cosy guest house. The room was cosy and clean with a comfortable on-suite shower. The new owners were very welcoming and helpful and catered for all our needs. The guest house is conveniently located a short walk from the centre of town. Couldn't fault this place at all and would gladly stay there again.

We stayed three nights at this B & B, loving every minute of the hospitality and every aspect of the facility.

The new owners of St. Stephen's Guest House have plenty of experience with the hospitality industry, and it shows in the ways they know how to be present to meet the needs of guests. It is clear that not only do they plan to not only continue the traditions of this establishment, but also expand and modernize details of the offering to accommodate guests. For example, the previous owners required guests to settle their bill the evening before departure, but the new owners live on-site, and prefer the more typical check out procedure. But I am ahead of myself; the stay and story starts earlier.

The goal of myself and my daughter was to visit both family and the University of Kent. Another B&B which our family often uses was full, and referred us to St. Stephens, advising us that their Internet presence is limited. That worked out great, as the owners, Sandra and David, not only handle the business of bookings promptly, using mobile phones and email as needed, but also use this as an opportunity to extend hospitality.

Our first clue as to how well things would go is when David expressed an interest in the details of our travel intinerary. In our case, we were planning to fly on an overnight flight from Washington Dulles, connecting in Canada, to London Heathrow, then drive to Canterbury. He assured us that not only would our room be ready if we arrived early, but also the ample, free, private, well-lit car park would be available, setting our minds at ease.

Our twin room was just perfect for me and my daughter. The corner room had four windows with excellent curtains/shades to allow us to use the natural light when we desired. The electric lights, table, chair, television, radio, shower, garment storage, bed and door locks all worked well. This is the kind of guest home where, if you ask for an electrical adapter at the front desk to charge your digital camera using a UK outlet instead of a US outlet, an entire box of adapters will be produced in, say, 15 seconds.

The breakfast room, like the car park, is generous in size. It is also nicely decorated in a blue motif and situated well with respect to the lush front garden. We were amazed at the quantity and quality of the "Full English Breakfast." Alongside a buffet of breads, juices, cereals and yogurts, we were well fed. We now understand that the sausages, ham, beans, mushrooms, stewed tomato and toast are traditional, but this cultural feature is well preserved as presented by David, our experience awesome. It became a joke between me and my daughter that our breakfast order declined each day: two full English the first day, one the next, which we split, and finally just selected items.

The location of the property was ideal for our needs. It was within walking distance of the University, the Cathedral, pubs, grocery store and has a bus stop right out front, which we did not require, since we drove. We loaded our GPS with data from Google Maps, which directed us conveniently to the car park driveway.

The room was supplied with plenty of nice towels every day, always ready for our use.

We took one day at the University, another touring the countryside and Dover Castle and a third visiting the Cathedral. Again at checkout, David gave us some good advice about what we would enjoy in London. Even after the trip has been completed, I am still enjoying exchanging emails with Sandra and David, suggesting in specific that they complete their registration at tripadvisor.com, enabling this first review. Enjoy your visit; at least one University department uses this facility exclusively for visiting faculty.
