The Falstaff in Canterbury
Ranked #11 of 16 Hotels in Canterbury
Reviewed 24 March 2014

My husband and I have just had a two day break in The Falstaff Hotel and neither of us could fault it at all.
It is in a great location opposite the Westgate.
Our room was a standard twin in The Old Woodmill at the rear of the premises. It was a very comfortable, clean, well-equipped and quiet room.
All the staff were very nice, helpful and efficient.
The breakfast was very nice too.
We will definitely be using this hotel again the next we visit Canterbury.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear as I would imagine it could be a little noisy at the front due to traffic...

We stayed at the hotel for a weekend break early in March. An old coaching inn with lots of character, friendly and helpful staff and a good breakfast. Our room, in an adjoining annex was clean and comfortable but a little hot. Entry to the annex required you to key in a password which given the location of the lock meant that I had to kneel down to enter it. Not an easy task when one has been exploring some of the towns fine bars - of which there are many. Indeed there is a very good pub The Bishops Finger next door to the hotel. There is also a very good seafood resteraunt on the opposite side of the road.

The hotel is a five minute stroll from Canterbury West train station and about 15 from the Cathederal.

Canterbury makes a great weekend break and is only a short bus ride from Whitstable with its seafood stalls.

We stayed here for one night to attend a nearby function. The first major bonus was that there is a secure car park. Our check-in was extremely welcoming and efficient. Our room was in The Windmill annexe. A major plus because we were at the rear of the grounds and away from the road. The room was very quirky because the bathroom and drinks making facility were up stairs to another area of the room. The room/s were very clean, with plenty of storage and the beds were extremely comfortable. The breakfast was excellent with very efficient table service. The check-out was also very polite and efficient. Do pick up a bonus card if you plan to return - there are loyalty bonuses.
I would recommend this hotel.

My friend and i spent two nights here in March 2014. The accommodation is basic but quiet adequate. Our room was clean and beds comfortable. Our main gripe was how warm are room was,(room 55) and bear in mind we stayed in March. There were signs on the walls saying don't open the windows (probably as a result of the strong winds/gales that we had been experiencing recently in the Southern part of the UK) This room in the summer would be unbearable, especially as there is no air conditioning. We did speak to reception and they were going to look into it, so it may be resolved now.
Breakfast excellent choice and friendly staff. The lady in charge of the bar in the evening was very friendly and was an excellent host. Sorry we didn't get her name, but she has dark bobbed hair!
I would return to this hotel as its priced reasonably, in a very convenient location, friendly and helpful staff and adequate accommodation.

Dear Swallow11,

Thank you so much for your recent stay with us and also for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We are really pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay, the breakfast and found the staff to be friendly. The windows in room 55 have been changed this week. As you mentioned they were damaged in the stormy weather and we had to wait until it was safe enough to replace them. We very much look forward to getting the chance to welcome you back again.

Kindest Regards,

John Alexander

We found the hotel pleasant with friendly and helpful staff and very close to the centre of Canterbury. The room was spacious and attractive but overlooking the high street above a pub which meant that it was noisy at night if the window was open. There was double glazing so with the window closed it wasn't too noisy; if you are a light sleeper it would be worth asking for a room at the back of the hotel. The breakfast was a buffet style with food to tempt all appetites!

Nice hotel overall with nice old features. Bigger than expected with nice patio and outside eating/drinking areas if the weather is nice. Staff friendly. However located on main road next to a pub. So can be quite noisy if you have a room overlooking the main road as windows in my room were not double glazed!

The room was small and some of the buttons on the tv remote were not working. The shower was a bit fidly to use to get the right speed and temperature for the shower. It would have been nice as well if the shower was enclosed but it wasn't.

Buffet breatfast we had was very good with lots of choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not by the main road

Lovely old hotel in very good position. Room was nice (a little dark as others have noted, but that's due to the age of the property and not a real problem). Nice view over courtyard. All very clean and well laid out. Used the bar after a night out for a few more drinks and the staff were all very helpful. Good value for money. Only disappointment was the breakfast buffet which had a reasonable selection but all the 'hot' food was actually lukewarm.
