“Great location, just let down by a couple of niggles”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

We recently stayed at the Abode for a birthday treat over Easter weekend. Our arrival was good, we were helped by a helpful young man who carried up our bags and were met by a colourful gas balloon on the bed wishing a happy birthday - a lovely touch.

The room was a good size and smelt fresh and clean. The bathroom, although clearly fresh and clean had a strange layout. There were no shelves for personal belongings and the shower screen was fixed and close to the basin, so running the bath taps meant almost laying in the bath and would have been virtually impossible for somebody with limited mobility. Also the the bathroom door was exactly opposite the wardrobe door so it meant a bit of co ordination to avoid bumping into each other when getting ready to go out. The drinks tray was also located inside the wardrobe - we thought this a bit strange. The shelves in the wardrobe were very basic and it seemed a bit odd to have hot drinks being made over shelves that contained our clothes! The room we noted was nicely furnished but a little scruffy in places, i.e. paint was chipped on corners and there were a few scuff marks around the walls.

Overnight because we were in the front of the building we had a few disturbances from late night revellers and the windows appeared fixed so there was no opportunity to get any fresh air.

Staff although polite, friendly and helpful but seemed to slip up on a couple of things.. when we asked if we should have a phone in the room it was commented that we should and there appeared to be a vague memory that our one had a problem with it. So at that point it was replaced. Our request for a newspaper was met on the first morning but no note had been made of it so on the second morning nothing arrived. Our drinks tray was not topped up on one morning so when we tried to make a morning cuppa there was no milk available. Small things, but a bit niggly when the rooms are not cheap!! And can anybody explain why the regional TV was for the Midlands when we were in the South East (not very helpful for getting the weather forecast!)?!!

But the location of the hotel was great and there are loads of great cafes and restaurants around.

We would stay again, but at these rates, things should be a little bit smoother.

Room Tip: Avoid the front of the hotel if possible.

I stayed with my to be finance on Friday, I explained on booking I was planning to propose.
When I arrived I was told I had been upgraded and what an upgrade biggest bed I've ever seen!!! We couldn't fault the staff, nothing was too much for them. The abode will be top of the list for our wedding venue...

Once again, we had a great stay at this hotel. Our Most Enviable room was lovely and we had a great night's sleep. We always enjoy the food in the restaurant and the champagne bar was great. A big thank you to Declan and all the staff!

This hotel is right in the middle of the High Street, and just around the corner from the Marlowe Theatre, which was the reason for our stay. We opted for the Spring Sensations offer which included dinner, bed & breakfast. Room (desirable) was OK. Nothing fancy but clean and the bed was super comfortable. Our only disappointment was that the dinner was in the Old Brewery pub which you had to access down the side of the hotel. Divine Dining menu turned out to be EXACTLY the same as the Express Menu - the only reason we knew was because the waiter gave us the wrong menu. When we asked for the correct one, it turned out to be exactly the same! Food was good but nothing really special. I guess for the price, you shouldn't expect top notch food. Breakfast the next morning was delicious - eggs benedict to die for and the full English also extremely good. All in all, a nice stay - would go again but perhaps be a bit more choosey about the room + try and dine in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Desirable was OK but if you want something special, go for the higher spec rooms.

For the price of a stay I was disappointed in the hotel.

The staff were a little 'snooty' and unfriendly, however the worst part was the incredibly soft mattress that was impossible for me to sleep comfortably on so I slept on the floor.

That is unacceptable for the price of a stay, a decent, relatively new mattress is the least a hotel should offer, this felt like it should have been replaced years ago.

Room Tip: Stay outside Canterbury and travel in.

Although the more expensive hotel in Canterbury (not by much) do not let it put you off. A great hotel, service etc as you would expect. Very good and will stay again. Only downside is the parking is extremely limited and the only other option is to park five minutes away using a voucher supplied by the hotel, also the beds although very nice, were too soft for myself.

I stayed at the abode on Friday 11th April 2014.
This hotel really is lovely, and would recommend it to anyone what is looking for a town centre location where all the sights really are on your door step.
The cathedral is just a few minutes walk, river boat trips are great fun .
We didn't have an evening meal in the hotel so unable to comment on the hotel restaurant, but the food smelled lovely. We decided to take a wonder down the road and found a fabulous seafood restaurant 'Chapmans 'again would recommend, on leaving the hotel turn left and walk 10-15 mins and you will find it on your left. The hotel has a champagne bar which was perfect for that cheeky cocktail and was very popular in the evening we stayed, and great coffee mid morning.
The hotel room was just right, got the usual toiletries, and if you pay more for your room a basket of goodies is included, as are slippers and robes.
The only down side of my visit was breakfast, I love my first morning cuppa, and unfortunalty mine was cold, but was soon replaced, the breakfast was nice full English, but the menu had other alternatives, I took a sneaky look at what other people had and all looked delicious. Also the parking, we were very fortunate that I did my homework before we left as to finding the hotel car park it's on stour street, and lucky for us the gate was open and a member of staff was on site to point us in the right direction of the hotel . My advice is do your homework if you want to park in the hotel car park, it's small so it's first come first serve, £6.00 24 hours, other car parks are nearby, but I prefered on site parking.
Oh and one more thing you can pay using your debit card, they just take payment on arrival.
All in all we enjoyed our time in Canterbury the staff at the hotel are really friendly and helpful, I would recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Room Tip: Pay that little bit extra of a upgraded room if it's a special occasion
