Westgate Gardens really are stunning in the summer. But also a lovely break away from the busy city life of Canterbury. Take a stroll by the river and relax, well worth walking through on your lunch break :)

Westgate gardens runs along the river where they do punting for anyone that fancies a boat ride, and there are lots of benches and a gigantic tree somewhere in there. However it gets very busy in the Summer with lots of school groups visiting the city. Which is great if you plan to sit and natter with friends, but not as nice if you want to relax, read a book and catch some sun.

Walk down one side of the river, and behind the old building, stop and admire the huge fat trunk of the Oriental plane tree. Walk back up the other side and have a look at the memorial.

This is a lovely place, I came here in the summer when all the plants were in full bloom. However the experience was completely ruined by a bunch of youths screaming abuse and taking the mick out of me and my friends, I was photographing the landscape and was so pleasantly sworn at. The river was a really nice view and although I didn't get any shots of the river as there were people paddling in it, which shouldn't be allowed for a historical part of the city, I did get some nice shots of the gardens. I do think the gardens could be made more like a gardens with a few more plants and someone patrolling the area to ensure the dossers are kept out and preservation of the plants is maintained. A lovely picnic destination though.

Stunning park with a picture book stream and stone archs. In the summer its idealic; even though the dossers are still there its a safer athomphere. In winter though it turns ugly with the families no longer using the park as much. Many parts are still peaceful and quiet. The gardens are worth a visit and make a lovely place to stroll though. Just keep your eyes open and avoid the patches where the down and outs congretate. Abbots Mill gardens on the other side of the city centre is better - same style park but in a nicer neighbourhood
