“Could do better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2011

My wife and I arrived at the hotel, which was close to the city centre. Adequate parking and a lovely old building. The rear garden was lovely, plenty of room and very peaceful. Our room was at the top of the house with a comfortable bed, but somewhat tatty. Not the cleanest of rooms either, we had a sheet with a large stain on it.
The staff seemed pushed, they were obviously operating at minimum levels. However very friendly and helpful. The food was there saving grace, beautifully prepared, hot with ample quantity. Breakfast and coffee was equally as good. Reception and bar good, but did not use swimming pool.

Stayed at short notice for 3 days. The room was excellent and the facilities were spotless. The service and welcome were faultless. Had our evening meeal there the first night, not only was it very good it was also excellent value for money. The break fast were cooked to order and were superb in a very pleasant dining room.
The only mild criticisms are: it would be a very fast walk to get to the cathedral in 10 minutes and while saving the planet is excellent, recycled toilet paper is not ! And also beware where you park as the trees have a nasty habit of depositing things onto your car.

We were looking for somewhere to stay in Canterbury for two nights (a double and a single room) but were not having much luck when we stumbled into this hotel. The receptionist was exceptionally helpful and explained that they did not have room for the two nights but we were welcome to stay in one of the self catering cottages. It was perfect. A living room, small kitchen, two bedrooms and bathroom. It was clean and comfortable and perfect for what we wanted. We ate in the hotel on the first night and it was fine. My mum (90) ordered duck but found it rather tough and asked if she could change and have the salmon, there was no problem with that and she ate every morsal! The service was good and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good and plentiful. All in all we had a very pleasant and comfortable stay. Unfortunately we did not have time to use the swimming pool but it certainly looked very inviting.

Room Tip: n/a as we stayed in one of the cottages

Stayed at the hotel for 3 nights, the room I stayed in was lovely - very well presented and extremely clean. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, but I was particularly impressed with my dining experience whilst at the hotel. As well as the excellent food, the waitress service was first class, with the attentive and friendly waitress making it a real pleasure to eat at the hotel restaurant. For this reason alone, I will be back!

We stayed here for four nights and found it a good base to explore the delights of Kent and Sussex. The hotel is immaculately clean and well serviced throughout. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is of a good standard. We had dinner twice in the restaurant - very good value and of outstanding quality. The menu (the same throughout the season it seems!) was sufficiently varied and the wine list, although not extraordinary, was quite acceptable for a hotel this size. The gardens are quite extensive and very well kept.
Our main regret is that dinner is not offered on Sunday evenings, which in my estimation reduces a hotel to B&B status - what a pity. Lifts are not available, understandably so, given the layout and age of the buidling - there do not seem to be any ground floor rooms, so disabled clients would have to take a self-catering cottage.
