“Great family run hotel - would stay again”
Reviewed 11 April 2010

We visited Canterbury in early April 2010 and stayed at the Ebury. On arrival we received a warm welcome and were introduced to Charlie the Labradoodle which the four and a half year old we were with, loved. The rooms were clean, well maintained and more spacious than the usual "chain" hotels. After a walk into Canterbury city centre we returned to the hotel to enjoy the swimming pool and whirlpool bath. Both were warm but the whirlpool bath was not hot as we had expected, but comfortable enough. Again the standard of cleanliness was excellent. We had decided to eat in the restaurant for our evening meal and the food was of a very good standard and the four and a half year old was catered for. Although there was no bar, beverages were available in the lounge area with a good, if quite pricey, selection.
Breakfast the following morning was good with cooked breakfasts being cooked to order rather than from a buffet.
There were seven of us in our party - one four and a half year old, two couples of twenties/thirties and a couple in thier sixties. All seven of us had a great visit to Canterbury and all enjoyed the Ebury and would definitely stay again.

We stayed for the Easter weekend. The hotel is clean and tidy but the most important thing for us was that it was quiet. We all slept well. The breakfasts are good and well presented. Reception staff helpful and attentive. The pool is a nice addition. It's a bit of a walk into the town centre but there are plenty of taxis if you can't manage the 10 minute walk back! Ample parking. Recommended.

We visited the Ebury to wind down after our daughter's wedding at the weekend and were well pleased with our choice of place to stay. Pleasantly welcoming, the warm and bright ambience made for a relaxing visit. The bedroom was a good size, let down by the ultra short bath in a very large bathroom, there was a hand held shower ok for hairwashing, I guess water conservation was behind the idea! They could also invest in some warmth without weight duvets, the ones we had were like lead weights! The mattress coils were also somewhat prominent. Breakfast and dinner were tasty and generous portions, one member of staff coped well with the waiting on. All in all a place to recommend.

On Ebury Hotel's website, it claims to be "one of the finest hotels in Canterbury", but I'm afraid this is rather an overstatement. Ebury hotel is an average, run-of-the-mill 3-star hotel. The decor is tired and threadbare in places, the double en-suite room (we stayed in) was sparse and a little depressing. It reminded me of a probate house, with its old fashioned (but not antique) furniture and furnishings. It was further from the centre of Canterbury than I thought and, I felt, overpriced for what it is.

On the upside, the room and bathroom were clean and the continental breakfast (which was delivered to our room) was generous (although the croissants were burnt to a crisp). Breakfast was served up to 9.30am (on a Sunday) so not good for lazy lie-ins. Its saving grace in my mind, was the service. Both upon welcome and check out (and phone calls) the service was friendly, professional and attentive.

For some bizarre reason this hotel is currently no.1 of 13 on Trip Advisor, which is where I originally found it, and although we didn’t use all of the facilities like pool and garden, I just can’t recommend it. Sorry.

Thank you for your review, we strongly believe that all of our website claims are true, we have photos of our bedrooms on the site, which if are not to your taste, you need not book. We are not a glass and chrome hotel, the hotel was built in 1840s and is a fine example of an elegant early Victorian building, and is decorated and furnished accordingly.

To address other inaccuracies, you will find that you have breakfast on a Monday morning (not classed as a weekend), which is indeed served until 9.30am whereas at the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) it is served until 10.00am. I also dont believe our decor is tired and threadbare.

I am pleased you found the room clean, and the staff were attentive and helpful at all times.

My wife and I stayed for two nights in this excellent hotel, we had the four poster and the bed and general comfort and cleanliness of the room was excellent. The evening meals were superb and well served although please, ladies first all the time.
The staff were unobtrusive but helpful when you needed them and the pool clean and well maintained.
The whole ambience was one of tranquility with an unhurried atmosphere, I would highly recommend this hotel.

As previous clients we found this hotel clean, warm with excellant service. We had a reasonable size room at the back on the first floor, thus it overlooked the garden and was very quite. For our stay we found the breakfast and dinner to a good standard.
My wife and I do not eat meat and we found the dinner menue for us OK for 2 nights. It would have been nice if there had been a special on the dinner menue rather the same printed menue each evening

We were lucky to stay in the purpose built cottages in the grounds of the delightful hotel and could not find fault at all. We had the best of both as we could use all the facilities of the hotel, yet have the privacy and flexibility of the self catering cottage. The location is fantastic it is within a short walking distance to the vibrant city centre. Restaurants in the city are plentiful and extremely enjoyable. We are definately going back for a very relaxing yet busy break.
