“The perfect hotel to stay for Graduation Ceremonies in Canterbury Cathedral”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2013

Lovely staff and owners who worked very hard and were so accommodating.Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. Lovely breakfast out on the terrace overlooking the Cathedral, bedrooms were comfortable, clean as were the showers and toilets. This hotel has still got a feeling of the ancient hostelry it once was, lovely beams everywhere, little nooks and crannies and off kilter floors - but then I love old historic houses and this ticked all the boxes! Wonderful location right in Canterbury with stunning views over the Cathedral. My daughter was graduating from the University with the ceremony being held in the Cathedral and she could not believe the amazing view from her bedroom window of the Cathedral, especially when it was floodlit at night.

Stayed here for a night whilst cycling in the area. The only downside (for cyclists) is that you have to haul your bike up the stairs, through reception and into a secure rear yard. Not ideal but not so bad.

However, this is the only area that I can really criticise. The staff were excellent. We'd booked a triple room but this was unavailable due to repairs/refurb so we were given two rooms at the same price. Nothing was too much trouble. We were guided to our rooms and shown where everything was. Next morning, the breakfast staff were also really helpful and when we said that we wouldn't have a full English (but have bigger lunch instead), they even suggested places we could try.

The standard of the rooms were excellent. The hotel is being refurbished and we had two of the updated rooms and they were very tastefully done in a contemporary style. Granted, it's not a boutique hotel but still very nicely appointed.

It's also in a superb central location, and is a very historic building; the uneven floor in the breakfast room has to be seen to be believed, with not a straight surface in the room. Very quaint! Also, the view from the rooftop terrace into the cathedral precinct is something you won't get elsewhere.

As others have said, this isn't some anonymous hotel chain but a really personal place. It's not some showy hotel, but has the cultural feel of a backpackers place though with much, much better facilities. It was a real surprise and I'd go back with my better half!

Stay here if you don't want to wake up and wonder what anonymous chain hotel you're in. No, it doesn't have all the ameninities of the big chains, but it more than makes up for it with its great location. The floors are creaky and the plumbing iffy, but you can sit on the rooftop terrace and take in the cathedral and all the tourists at your leisure. And it's only a few minutes walk to many of the attractions you might want to visit. All of the staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms on the Buttermarket side are pretty noisy.

Unsure what to expect due to mixed reviews but what a wonderful surprise! It's just been taken over by new owners and is in the process of being renovated and upgraded. Beautiful room with ensuite and four poster bed, really clean, lovely facilities. Location is just superb! To the front is the Butter Market Square and at the rear the beautiful cathedral which can be overlooked from the sun lounge area. Staff went out of their way to be helpful, especially the young man on the reception desk who could answer any query with the aid of his laptop! Would definitely go again but hopefully for longer next time.

I started in a single room for two nights and then my wife joined me for three nights. We had rooms in the newly renovated section of the hotel. The rooms (and bathroom) were excellent and they had just retained enough of the character of the building (gently sloping floors etc) to keep it interesting. The staff were welcoming and strove to be helpful. The internet was only available in the long which was slightly inconvenient. We only had the continental breakfast which was quite good. It's located right in the middle of the old part of town and we could easily get to all the attractions, as well as some excellent restaurants. Overall, we had a wonderful time.

Simply the worst hotel I have ever had to endure. Noisy outside at night and first thing in the morning. The room was dirty and half maintained. I was out of there first thing, missing the breakfast!

I would like to have known on booking that I would have to share a shower and loo with the entire floor. I would not have booked if I had known. Late evening street chatter kept me up past midnight - the charm of the building prevented the windows from closing completely. Next morning before 6am, the street cleaners clattered and banged their bins over the cobblestones until the power pumps from the single shower shook the whole floor as someone else got up.

The taps were mismatched in the sink, the carpet was so dirty I kept my shoes on, and only took them off when I got into bed.

Many people have commented on the view. You can see the view from the street, you dont have to suffer the hotel to get the view.

Please dont fall for the reviews saying how loverly it is, it is not.

CathedralGate, Guest Relations Manager at Cathedral Gate Hotel, responded to this review, 3 July 2013
Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments. Being a hotel in the very heart of Canterbury’s thriving city centre we unfortunately do suffer a bit of street noise. Knowing this, we provide disposable ear plugs to our guests in all our street facing rooms.

We understand and appreciate your dissatisfaction regarding some of the current décor in the, as yet, un-renovated wing of the hotel. In our “standard” rooms, with shared bathrooms and toilet facilities, we acknowledge some of the carpets are showing their age. As a consequence of this, we make our staunchest effort to ensure the carpets are cleaned daily to a rigorous standard.

Here at Cathedral Gate we take great care and pride in providing the widest price range of any hotel in Canterbury so that travellers with any budget may enjoy this historic hotel. To that extent we provide less expensive rooms with shared bathroom and toilet facilities and it is made clear when booking a room online or when booking by phone that the room comes only equipped with said facilities. If this is a case where you booked by phone and the receptionist on duty did not inform you of the facilities available in your room we would greatly welcome more details so that we may investigate the incident and improve our service in the future.

The cathedral in your backyard, the Butter Market at your doorstep! The hotel is right beside the entrance to the cathedral and has a sitting room and pretty multilevel garden from which you can admire it at an unprecedented close range. Some rooms, such as the single "Cathedral" room in which I stayed, have a magnificent and unobstructed view of the cathedral. Breakfast rooms overlook the Butter Market on the street side. Owner Deb is lovingly renovating the property and is an amazingly hospitable hostess. The English breakfast is also massive and well presented. However, some things won't change, and these are the room sizes, narrow halls, low doorways and slanted floors that one should expect in a historically protected building from the period. Also the noise from the Butter Market, where tourists collect during the day and youth congregate at night. If you want luxury and space, go to the Marriott (and spend accordingly). But if you want atmosphere, location and great hospitality, stay here -- and, for the sake of other adventure-minded travelers, leave your griping at the door. I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: The cathedral side of the building is quieter.
