Owner description: Canterbury Roman Museum’s story began on what appeared to be a rather unremarkable day in 1868. When workmen, digging trenches for a new drainage system, reached eight feet below street level they unwittingly unearthed a beautifully preserved Roman floor mosaic. Fast-forward to the aftermath of the Second World War, when excavations began under the cellars of shops destroyed by bombing, and another startling discovery was made. Archaeologists had just revealed an under-floor heating system, wall paintings, and a dazzling mosaic corridor. The site was no longer an isolated floor mosaic, but the remains of a very large, and no doubt very costly, Roman Town House. Over time a museum arose to encompass the remains and preserve what is now known to be one of the UK’s only remaining in situ Roman pavement mosaics and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Canterbury Roman Museum is Kent’s only Roman Museum; providing a fascinating and family-friendly insight into life in Roman Britain. Visitors can explore Canterbury’s history, wander through the marketplace and discover hidden treasures as they step back, and down, to the streets of Roman Canterbury…

Leave us with the where-with all for excellent little museum. Not packed with loads of stuff but what they've got is quality. It covers all areas of roman life and they've made the best of what they have with displays supplemented by good reconstructions. It's built 'underground' at roman street level to incorporate the preserved sections of the excavated roman house - fascinating to see it in situ.
You can get an inclusive ticket to the heritage museum if you want to go beyond the Romans which is really good value.

Have been twice now and learnt so much both times. The roman pavement is worth the entrance fee itself, amazing! It's fascinating to see what Canterbury was like in Roman times. Presented very well. If your wanting some high tech interactive whizzy museum go elsewhere. Just good old fashioned information nicely presented. Helpful staff, good value for money especially if you get a joint ticket for the other museum.

We visited The Roman museum as my year 3 has been studying The Romans. This was a fun back up to what she was learning and my 5 year old also enjoyed it. I would imagine this would be a good place to visit with a school but it's not a big museum and won't give grown ups much extra information that they probably know.

Reasonable for £8 per adult and children free.

A really interesting museum. Nice and quiet, staff were friendly and happy to answer questions. You even get to try on the helmets and stuff! Good fun, would even go again.
