“Best B & B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013

We stayed overnight whilst meeting friends in Canterbury. Chose this B & B based on trip Adviser and ability to park the car. Cannot overstate our pleasure at having found such a nice welcoming and well presented accommodation.( Unlike the experience of our friends who stayed at the other end of town). The room was furnished to a high standard with many nice touches such as a cafetiere, fresh milk in the room fridge and lovely bathroom with a good shower and bath.
The owner was very welcoming when we arrived but apart from that totally non intrusive, providing us with a door key and offering the chance to pre-order our breakfasts.
We had a cooked breakfast accompanied by porridge and fruit. It was cooked freshly and my fried eggs were perfectly presented together with a sharing dish of sausages, bacon, mushrooms and plenty of toast.
I normally stay in hotels and found that the quality of this accommodation, though obviously limited in number of rooms, exceeded that of many hotels charging an equal amount. My only caveat is that parking, if all rooms are occupied, might be a problem.
Well worth its 5 star rating.

Forget staying in hotels and get a sense of an extremely well presented B&B. As many others have said great attention to detail and fully deserving of its 5 stars. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We followed up her good suggestions like eating at The Goods Shed which is beside the station. Deeson's in Sun Street is recommended too.

The breakfast has an extensive menu and all very good quality.

Parking was no bother at all.

Room Tip: The sun came in room 5 at the right time. Comfortable ordinary double bed , not too keen on 4 poster...

I have been meaning to write this for a while to say how wonderful our impromptu visit was! We stayed here last minute and were really happy with what we found. The room was gorgeous, with a lot of thoughtful touches, clean and cosy. The shower was great and the bed very comfy. The hostess was very welcoming and went above and beyond what we expected to make our stay enjoyable and hassle free. Thank you for everything!

We chose this B&B because of its location. In fact the owner did not allow us to park outside despite there being at 5 spaces using the feeble excuse that all the following night's guests might magically arrive at 10.30 in the morning! We would have been much better placed if we had stayed outside Canterbury and used the 'Park & Ride'. We would have saved £40 per night in pleasant countryside with more welcoming surroundings.
The booking was made by a very pleasant woman. It came as a shock when we met the owner in the afternoon, who was very brusque and before showing us to our room demanded to know what we wanted for breakfast the following day.
There was a nauseous smell and the room was cluttered. The bedding included a small useless pillow which prevented a good night's sleep. The bath was too small to lie in. The fridge contained items which were no interest to us, but are clearly charged for in the price of £110, plus 3 1/2% cc surcharge, per night at the end of September. The milk provided was 'on the turn'.
Breakfast on an undersized table was ruined by unwanted muzak, which when turned down made a humming noise. The owner was not keen to turn her equipment off and we had to resort to switching it off at the mains to eat a peaceful breakfast. It seemed that that one is entitled to only one piece of toast judging by the reaction when we knocked on the kitchen door to beg for another. A request for some hot water to make the tea bags, crammed into a small teapot, drinkable was simply ignored.
In summary, if visiting Canterbury, there is no point in staying here. Everything is driven by presentation to try and justify the price.

Definitely our favourite accommodation out of 7 weeks of travel throughout Europe and Britain. We stayed in the Garden Room and felt like royalty. Loved the 4-poster bed and all the added touches which made our stay so comfortable and luxurious. After mainly experiencing impersonal hotel rooms and uninterested staff, it was such a relief to be sincerely welcomed, pampered, and made to feel like valued guests by Isobelle, our lovely owner/hostess. The location is perfect, and the walk into Canterbury was easy (and yes, it really did take 10 minutes, though we dawdled home after indulging in many of the local cafes and restaurants). We particularly enjoyed relaxing in the beautiful garden on balmy nights and sunny days. For a couple of Australians who haven't been exposed to a great deal of history, this stay felt like being in a scene from a favourite English TV drama and will be fondly remembered for many years to come. We would thoroughly recommend Magnolia House to everyone!

Room Tip: Treat yourself - book the Garden Room with the 4-poster bed! It's also on ground level and has a...

We had read about Magnolia House and were a little disappointed in it. The room was lovely and had a good bathroom and lighting. There was even a dressing table which is always nice. The welcome tray was also nice and the frig even had a welcome bottle of wine. A very nice young man greeted us, told us about the B & B, gave us a map and directions. The next morning the lady who served breakfast said good morning but didn't introduce herself. We didn't know if she was the cook or owner until I finally asked her the second day. She answered our questions but wasn't very friendly for someone in that business. We were told that the walk to town was 10 to 15 minutes. We are walkers but it took longer than that. I think next time we would stay closer. Another complaint is the literature in the room and in the parlor was mostly outdated.

I had a lovely experience at this hotel. I was at Canterbury for an interview and due to nerves (I think!) I left something in my room, which Isobelle posted to me without taking a penny. Otherwise, very attentive (but not over the top) atmosphere in a lovely, well-appointed hotel. I liked the little touches in the rooms: sewing kit, nail file, sanitary products. Would stay here again for definite.
