“St Thomas' Catholic Church, Canterbury”

St. Thomas' Catholic Church
Reviewed 31 July 2013

This church is a real gem. Sunday Mass there is truely inspiring. The clergy are sincere and devout. Don't forget to check out the side chapel with the relics of SS Thomas of Canterbury and Oscar Romero.

The main body of this church is quite traditional and has a peaceful feel that is hard to find elsewhere. The modern section added to the left of the altar spoils the feel but was clearly needed at one point to house the catholic community in the area. Not sure if that is still the case but it would nice to think that there is some spirituality in the community. On a wall at the back of the church there is a notice board where parishioners can fix a note asking for prayers for specific reasons. They can make for very sobering reading and are a touching reminder that some of our problems are trivial compared to those being suffered by others.

A beautiful place to worship, with working Catholic priests. The big place over the road was theirs once too, but just think of the maintenance

This small church is in the centre of the town not a million miles from the cathedral. The current shape and feel of the interior is unusual insofar as it is not entirely symetrical around the central alter. Below a double rose window the ornate, high alter has three beautiful carved panels and to the right is a shrine containing two small relics of St Thomas. One is a piece of his vestment and the other a small piece of bone. A peaceful place and well worth a visit whilst in the cathedral town. The church website is at http://www.rc.net/southwark/canterbury/index.htm
