This abbey has as much history as the cathedral and it deserves your visit. I would allow half day if you wish to truly enjoy this place and explore it in full. St Augustine built the first churches to become part of the abbey and also the original church which then became the cathedral.
I recommend to visit the abbey when the weather is good as it is all open air and you should bring the kids and make it an experience for them too!

We went through this lovely site on the anniversary of st. Augustine's death. In honor of the good saint, there were docent guided tours. We had a great guide and learned so much. This is a lovely site that has been excavated extensively. There are lots of ruins, but our guide helped us understand what we saw. We also got to go through some of the buildings at the adjacent school.

This site is on the lists of included sites on the English Heritage Overseas visitors pass. That means free entry. We strongly suggest that visitors to England consider this pass. It is a bargain!

It is old and the history is pretty cool. A lot of it is basically ruins. And the museum part is fairly basic. It's an ok way to spend an hour if you have one.

Hundreds of years of history - all in one place - Excellent little museum and very helpful staff - definitely worth a visit.

Although this is in the middle of Canterbury, within earshot of the cathedral, this is a very peaceful place. The audio guide is good and is included in the entrance fee and the information boards are numerous. There are plenty of benches around so it's a lovely place to eat a peaceful lunch in the sunshine, away from the hubbub of the town centre.
