Checking in from Brugge around 9.00pm horrified to find room had been double booked after many calls by the member of staff on duty finally transported to whitstable in the middle of nowhere adjacent to a duel carriage way. This booking had been made and paid for weeks in advance and booked to be near the coach station and easy to meet with friends the following day who had arrange to travel to Canterbury.

Staff very helpful and gave complimentary meal and arrange a taxi to transport us, but no apology from travel lodge itself for this mess. Not the fault of the staff at Chaucer who were more the helpful, but obvious they are left to be the fall guys, very poor. Second night back in Canterbury for our second night booking, noisy room with people in the above room could be heard till very late evening. Terrible pillows. Experience spoiled an otherwise perfect holiday.

We chose Canterbury as a pleasant city to spend a night en route for the Dover-Dunkirk ferry. The Travelodge has been refurbished and rebranded in red and blue colours which look good, though we thought the fittings and extras a little spartan compared to other Travelodges we have stayed at. The wardrobe has limited hanging space, just one top shelf for clothes but no side shelves, there are no bedside tables, just a small space set into the bedhead, and there is no shower gel dispenser, just one very small bar of soap. Breakfast was fresh and served in a pleasant dining room - book online and save £1. I last stayed in the Chaucer Hotel in April 1965 when it was a Trusthouse branded hotel. I was delighted to stay again now, and it is just fine as a budget hotel for a comfortable short break a stone's throw from Canterbury city centre, and near to the Kent coast.

We had a lovely short break here. It was comfortable, clean and close to the city centre. The only bugbear is crossing that awful ring road! Its hard to avoid using those nasty, wee stained underpasses, but railings prevent you from crossing at surface level. Not Travelodge's fault of course! But Canterbury's traffic engineers seem to have a real dislike for pedestrians. There are few proper crossings, and you have to walk out of your way to get to them. Apart from that, the hotel is nicely placed to get straight into the city centre quickly. Over the road in the Whitefriars Centre is a Tesco supermarket. You have to go right into the centre to find it, but it is worth hunting out for nice inexpensive sandwiches, drinks and other essentials.
Canterbury is perfect for a short break, and you can reach everywhere on foot. It is lovely just to wander up the little atmospheric lanes and streets. We found all the main attractions that way, rather than deliberately searching them out. There are lots of eating places, and some nice real ales in the pubs. The students are very noisy and lively at night at the weekends, so be warned! If you want to hear singing of a more sublime type, go to the Cathedral for evensong at 5.30p.m. It is absolutely free, and is the experience many tourists overlook.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the roads get the noise from late night revellers, so opt for rooms at the rear if that bothers you.

Stayed here as a family on our way to France. Not a bad hotel, recently refurbished and very clean, the staff were also very helpful. We used the cafe for tea which was nice, the food was excellent. It's situated down a tiny back road and the parking has to be payed for, (£5) which is a bit much! Overall, it offered a nice stop over with good value for money, just make sure you factor the parking cost into your overall 'value' factor!

We stayed for 3 nights and found the hotel convenient for getting in and around Canterbury with good access to both stations. Try to avoid the underpass and use the crossings to access the Town Centre - it feels safer! Staff were friendly and provided excellent and courteous service, all you need is nearby with the a cinema opposite (in case it rains!) and a large supermarket at the rear of the hotel for any goodies needed for the room. Would recommend the breakfast at the Wetherspoons across the road. Despite being in the centre of town the room was spacious and fairly quiet - would certainly use again if in the area
