“Lovely Old Hotel with Old Customer Values”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We stayed at this hotel for my Daughters wedding in another hotel in Hotel in Canterbury. We booked in Saturday afternoon and from the start the staff could not do too much for us. We were shown to our room and parking was explained as we were allowed to park in the hotel for 24 hours for £5 which was a bargain. After booking in we walked to the hotel where the reception was and came back at about 23.00. In the morning we decided to have breakfast there with other family members and the value was exceptional and it was explained what we had to do and what was available. A member of staff came over and asked how our stay was and we explained a couple of problems we had encountered which was beyond their control and on checking out we were told that we would be given an E discount to use next time we made a booking at another or this chain of hotels .The staff were very good and great ambassadors to there employers and the food again was excellent value.

Room Tip: Book early to get a bargain deal.

The hotel is well positioned for a stay in Canterbury. As this was advertised as the "New Look". Unfortunately we felt that's it only really good point. The cost £96 for one night no breakfast is fine but we would expect a good room for that price. The room was very small, I had to sleep on the other side to normal as I could not get out that side. The bathroom is really small and uncomfortable to use. There was no extractor fan or toilet brush this we felt is very un-hygienic. Also no shower gel or anywhere in the shower (slippery floor) to place toiletries We can't believe that all rooms are this size it was a single room with a double bed. Having used Premier inn for years can now see why. This is the first bad review I have given hope it's the last.

Room Tip: Check room size first we had 115

The staff at the Canterbury Chaucer Central hotel were warm, welcoming and cheerful. They were also very helpful. When I am next in Canterbury I will not hesitate to stay at the Chaucer Travelodge again.

have stayed several times in travelodge and this has been one of my most pleasant stays.
Major +++ points
-Excellent Location: of travelodge, is 5-10min walk from city centre, restaurants, cafes, shops, extremely helpfull as someone who doesnt drive, was a major blessing
-Genuinely friendly reception staff
-Rooms on the slight small side, but for one person is sufficient
-Rooms are exceptionally clean, and good quality shower, varying temperatures and pressures (an additional plus point if you compare it to other travelodges shower facilities)
-Room, hotel is generally quiet & peacefull
-great price

Overall my experience at this travelodge was an above than average stay than my other travelodge stays. I would say Its ideal for middle-age to elderly couples who want a short quiet pleasant stay that wont break the bank. The surroundings are peacefull and amenities close by. Place has a welcoming & friendly atmosphere

Customer service was excellent. Room had everything for overnight stay, I would like more clothes storage if staying longer. Breakfast was fresh, well cooked and a good variety. Travelodge in good location for tourist spots, shopping, restaurants, bus and rail stations.

OK, A Travelodge is generally going to be an OK bet for a couple of nights and this one is no different. Location is right at the start of the high street but far enough away from the roundabout that noise is not an issue. £5 a day to park... acceptable. Lovely helpful staff and the place was spotless.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from stairwells, we were not disturbed but as usual with cheaper hotels you get...

Reading some of the less favourable reviews for this hotel it would be easy to say that 'you get what you pay for' and to a point that is true but it is also true to say that there are certain things that should come as standard.

Leaves in the hallway was a problem for one reviewer - hardly the end of the world and I imagine that it was windy. OK, another set of doors would have helped but then the leaves would have piled up there. 'We couldn't get into the hotel because there was a huge pile of leaves up against the door'.

I consider that we got what we paid for: a comfortable night's sleep and a breakfast in the morning. These places don't pretend to represent five star hotels so I'm happy with that.

However.

While the bed was indeed comfortable, the level of soundproofing was not satisfactory. We could hear the people below talking quite clearly although the male in the party did have quite a loud voice. As this was a family, with a child, I figured that they would be turning in quite early and they did, so all was quiet after that. At least until they got up at some unearthly hour, presumably to catch a ferry. While much of this problem rests on the consideration of others (Hah!), I would expect an absence of such sound based intrusions.

Breakfast was suitable enough to get stoked up for the day but in comparison with its competitors, Travellodge only provides basic fare which doesn't cater too well for vegetarians. Scrambled egg, beans, toast, croissants, cereals, yoghurt, juice coffee, a variety of teas and a very limited choice of fruit. This might sound a lot but it just isn't up there with its competitors.

We didn't experience any of the cleanliness problems which other reviewers have and in agreement with most, the staff were friendly and helpful. The £5 per 24 hours parking fee was, considering that I hate paying to park my car, acceptable and I would imagine cheaper than a standard car park.

The hotel is right on the edge of Canterbury so is very convenient but my general impression is that this hotel provides just enough to get by rather than going the extra mile just to give that little bit more customer satisfaction which seems to be needed.
