Tudor House
Ranked #26 of 74 Canterbury B&B and Inns
Reviewed 14 June 2014

The Tudor House is a 500-year-old building on a quiet side street, but only about a block from the center of Canterbury. As one might expect in such a unique old building, the rooms are just a bit quirky, with no two exactly the same. But the inn is comfortable, and the hosts are among the most friendly we have met anywhere--helpful, congenial, and accommodating. The full English breakfast is served in an attractive dining room that reflects the age and history of the house. Tudor House is a 15-20 minute walk, or a short taxi ride, from either of the Canterbury rail stations. It would be hard to find a more convenient or friendly base from which to explore this beautiful old city.

The location of Tudor House is perfect-you are at the centre of everything yet tucked away. The hosts were so friendly and welcoming-nothing was too much trouble for them and breakfast is great!I had a fab time being so close to all the history and also 2 mins walk from the art course I was studying-Perfect!As a single traveller, the price was very competitive indeed and the history of the house adds a different dimension to your stay-wonderful.

My family and I spent a couple of weeks travelling around England. The two nights we spent at the Tudor House were my favourite of the trip. This is a large part because of the owners. Taking a 16th century building and transforming it into a comfortable and welcoming retreat is no small feat. But this couple managed it perfectly. Warm and welcoming, we were able to relax and enjoy all that this wonderful city has to offer. And the breakfast was delightful. I hope to visit again someday.

Room Tip: We had a water closet in our room and a full bath down the hall. I wasn't sure this would work...

My daughter and I stayed in this b&b for 3 days 2 nights. It is very easy to find our way from Canterbury West station, 9 min walk. Mamad (husband) was very welcoming. The b&b is very cosy. There is no stairs up as it is a very old house. We stayed on the 2nd floor, facing the street which we came in from. It is very quiet at night. The room is spacious, with 2 armchairs, 2 side tables, 1 drawer with tv in front of the bed, another table in front of the toilet for tea, coffee and a kettle. It also has a cupboard with a back of extra blanket which is tucked away next to the toilet. It has a fireplace which is not in used but is well-decorated. Cup(s), bar soap (s) and a 2 in 1 shampoo packet(s) is provided. As usual, I have the photos below for your reference :)

Room Tip: Rooms facing Best Lane is the best! It is very quiet if you are the sort that needs peace and quiet...

My wife and I stayed here in May 2013 for one night, and we don't think we've ever experienced such amazingly warm hospitality at a B&B. Mamad and Mazi (the owners) are incredibly dedicated and friendly. From the moment we arrived, we experienced superior service!

The rooms are a little quirky and "average" compared to a modern building, but keep in mind this is a Tudor house (meaning it's even older than most countries), so the windows are thin, the heating is a bit finicky, the floors uneven... To me this just adds charm to the place, and you should start to think about how amazing it is that this building is still here!

Our room had two single beds and a self-contained bathroom on the top floor but unfortunately overlooked the noisy Pizza Express next door. The location is excellent however as you're within minutes of the high street (shops), and surrounded by history at every turn.

Breakfast the following morning however was the highlight, with a huge English breakfast on offer done exactly how you like it - absolutely fantastic, and I'd recommend booking a stay for this alone!

The Tudor House is just a few feet from the High Street in the middle of Canterbury. We had a double room and the room and furnishings were very good. The owner was very attentive to our needs. The one shortcoming which must be recognized before making a reservation is that there is NO parking near by. If there is street construction, which during our stay, there was, you may not even be able to drive to it to drop off your luggage. Parking is nearby at a city owned car park. If you can't drive up to the Tudor House, you will have to "drag your bags" from & to the car park. Since we couldn't get to the place, the owner found us in a car park & guided us to the one nearest the B&B and helped us with our bags to and from his place. I would recommend it for anyone physically able to do that.

One cannot get any closer to the heart of Canterbury & it's many centuries of history than the Tudor House.

Room Tip: Getting to all rooms starts with, "first take your luggage up a very narrow staircase." I...

We stayed here in October while visiting our daughter who is at Kent Uni. Unfortunately, we had to change our booking date, but this was not a problem and we stayed on a Friday night. The owner could not have done more for us, in terms of ideas of where to visit and what was on. The breakfast was very nice to and set us up for the day very nicely. We would definitely stay again
