We had a night at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge at the end of August prior to boarding a cruise in Dover. The hotel was a wonderful location right in the grounds of the cathedral with parking at the door. This was a relief as we half expected to have to unload luggage at the gate and find a park. The service was exceptional and room a good size. The bathroom plain but very clean and functional. The big advantage was access to the cathedral our reason for going to Canterbury. We could also walk out the door to be in the centre of town with a good range of cafes and eating establishments. The lodge served a good buffet breakfast and guests also had access to the library with a computer and internet acccess. It was very quite at night and we went to sleep listening to music in the cathedral. This was excellent accommodation at a very reasonable price.

With parking adjacent to the magnificent cathedral, cost of entrance to the cathedral included and secure evening access to the town centre, this is the perfect accommodation for Canterbury.
The staff are charming, with nothing too much trouble.
The accommodation clean and comfortable and, though many say the rooms are small, we didn’t find them at all small – certainly had smaller. Plenty of choices of places to eat and drink within a couple of minutes easy walking. Excellent breakfast in the cost is cooked to order.

As far as city locations go this is hard to beat. The rooms are small, the hotel has no particular charm or romantic appeal, but it is clean, contempory and quite neat. If you want to drop anchor in a lovely city with an abundance of history, stroll into town and have a special time, this is the place for you. There are some nice touches, such as the free entry to the Cathedral, the discounts from local restaurants, a good breakfast, and a delightful little garden where tea can be taken in splendid seclusion. But staying more than a few nights might get a bit wearing. We found the rooms (two stays in a year) small and airlesss, and the mattresses do have a dreadful plastic incontinency cover on them which does not help create a good night's sleep. Would we go back again? Hmm, we spotted a new travel lodge just on the outside of the walls and this might offer better value for money.

Room Tip: They all unfortunately seem tyhe same

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your constructive feedback. Having listened to the comments about the mattress toppers, we have taken the decision to replace these with an alternative item. This process will be completed by the end of the month. It is nice to see you have chosen to stay with us on more than one occasion and I sincerely hope you do so again in the future.

my wife an i stayed here for three days in late september. the hotel is located in the grounds of the cathedral and as such is nice and quiet and the view from your room is as good as it gets. the rooms, though not large, are well equipped and the staff at the hotel and in the grounds of the cathedral itself were very friendly and helpful (one of the grounds security chaps was giving us a talk on some of the wonderful trees in the grounds. it was great). the buffet breakfast is good and varied. to be able to walk around the cathedral grounds in the late evening when the crowds have gone is a real bonus and gave me the chance to break out my tripod and get some good shots of the illuminated cathedral. step outside the cathedral and you are right in the middle of the town with lots of lovely old streets and buildings to explore. two suggestions for visitors. 1, take the 40 min rowing boat tour. informative and amusing. well worth it. 2. if you fancy a quick bite to eat try the little cafe in the old gaol by the Westgate. fabulous food and good price. we really enjoyed our short stay in canterbury and the hotel and it's location made all the difference. we would not think twice about coming here again or recommending it to others.

I'm not a fan of modern chain hotels and when we arrived my initial impression was upmarket travelodge / conference centre. I was wrong, the quality of materials & design combined with a special location make for an excellent hotel. Whilst Canterbury can seem a bit lively on a Saturday night it's only a short distance before you are welcomed back into the cathedral precincts by the friendly security staff. (CCL - if you read this please tell the chap on Postern Gate he could try being a little more welcoming to visitors).

The rooms are good quality, the breakfast is good and having the precincts to yourself is very special. A beautiful place to stay.

Room Tip: The rooms within the precincts are more expensive but it is very special.

The lodge is only two stories, very new, and beautifully designed to fit with the buildings that surround the cathedral. It is inside the cathedral gates, and guests are free to roam the grounds after the gates are locked until eleven.

As another reviewer said, the location is hard to beat. It is next to the cathedral, seconds from the pedestrian centre of Canterbury, a short walk to the ruins of Canterbury Abbey, and within walking distance of both train stations.

The lodge is also a meeting place connected with the Archdiocese. One is aware of the Anglican connection. eg. Guests are asked to respect the religious setting. A library is stocked with theological works that are mostly Anglican. The rooms are a bit stark, like a very upscale retreat centre. Staff, and some things about the surroundings, make the place inclusive. A couple old Catholics felt right at home.

The windows open onto views of the specular old cathedral, illuminated at night. That, the religious connection, the architecture of the lodge, and a little gin make this place heavenly.

We stayed here twice in one week and both times found our rooms to be comfortable and clean, the staff friendly and helpful, and the location hard to beat. There is a large breakfast selection from cereal to cheese, from fruit to full english, and fresh coffee/tea bought to your table, choice for even the most difficult to please.
A previous reviewer has commented on the parking but we found that buying a voucher from the lodge and using a public carpark, just around the corner, wasn't a problem as security will let you in to drop off/collect bags. Saying this it is better to prebook parking within the ward of the Cathedral as sapces are limited.
With free entrance to the Cathedral and discounts at some local restaurants included with your accomodation you'd find it hard to beat the Lodge in Canterbury.
We would throughly recommend staying here and we ourselves hope to return very soon.
