We have just spent a weekend at the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge to celebrate our daughters10th birthday and had a *wonderful* stay. The location of this modern hotel couldn't be any better - set in the grounds of the stunning Cathedral with free parking right outside, unlimited (free) access to the Cathedral and grounds and Canterbury's many attractions (inc the theatre). Restaurants and shops just a moments walk away.

The hotel itself is modern and bright whilst staying sympathetic to old-worldliness of its surroundings. The reception staff are welcoming and helpful. We were given passes to come and go from the Cathedral at our leisure and a parking pass for the front of the hotel (which is yards from the Cathedral). We walked around the Cathedral first thing, had lunch at the wonderfel 'Cafe Des Amis' Mexican restaurant , which is located opposite the Westgate Gardens and river and went to the Marlowe Theatre afterwards (this has been completely modernised).
When we returned to the hotel early evening, it was dark and misty and the Cathedral was beautifully lit up creating the most wonderful ambience. In the evening, we were given a list of restaurants offeing discounts to Cathedral Lodge guests and settled on 'Strada' Italian restaurant, which is located just outside of the Cathedral gates. Our meal was lovely.

The hotel room on our return was very comfortable. Very nice beds (complete with new mattress) plenty of soft pillows, a seating area with views of the Cathedral and a modern shower room (although the shower was slightly cramped and a little painful...a bit like pin-pricks!). There is no bar or evening restaurant on site but drinks can be delievered to the room and there tea and coffee making facilities.

We enjoyed a fabulous buffet breakfast in the morning, with traditional English and continental foods available, eggs cooked to order, fruit and cereals. Our only complaint was the cold plates.

We would highly recommend this reasonably priced hotel as a base to explore Canterbury and soak up the wonderful atmosphere of the Cathedral.

This really is a unique hotel. Set in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral gives this place a sense of occasion, and makes you feel like you are staying somewhere special. The hotel itself has good size rooms, clean and with friendly staff. The breakfast was pretty good. But you come here for the feeling of staying in the cathedral. Coming back after dinner and seeing the cathedral lit up, thirty feet from our room was amazing. As was waking up in the morning and visiting the cathedral before it opened for visitors and morning services. Really cool.

The location of the hotel is within the Cathedral Grounds. The welcome from staff is good. The accommodation and breakfasts are of excellent standard and the town of Canterbury is right outside the gates. When you get back at night it quiet and peaceful within the grounds and this should ensure a good nights sleep. It feels special and in short, I can't see how this hotel could be bettered.

The room is of reasonable size, has a view of the cathedral, provides comfortable beds and the usual tea/coffee making facilities. There is an iron and ironing board in the room. The clothes hanging area has no door and there is one chair. A hair drier is provided. The bathroom has a shower cubicle but no bath and the size of the bathroom reflects this. There is a heated towel rail.

A light and airy dining room provides buffet style full English and Continental breakfast with a good selection of items. Eggs are cooked to order-just ask.

Admission to grounds and cathedral costs £9 for non guests during normal opening hours. However a card is issued to guests which enables free access at any time during your stay. The Cathedral Grounds are closed to the public at 9.00.pm. After this time guests at the Lodge can ring a bell and be admitted to the grounds by a member of the security team. Just show the card.

Secure parking within the Cathedral Grounds is available. Pre book this if you can. I arranged mine at the time of booking at a cost of £5 per day available from check in day (3.00pm) till check out (11.00am). It is convenient, feels secure and a pass is issued for access during your stay. It is well worth doing.

Room Tip: Pre book your car parking space. it is well worth doing

Excellent location in Cathdral precincts, close to all main attractions. Parking arrangements worked fine with pre-booked ticket for 24hr parking in Quening Gate car park nearby which we collected after being able to drive into precincts to check in and leave luggage. Comfortable, clean room and friendly, helpful staff. Good buffet breakfast - we can recommend the fresh kipper, cooked to order! Lunch and dinner are not provided, but there are lots of local eateries and reception will give you a map showing those which offer discounts to Lodge guests.

You can't do any better in Canterbury if you want to visit the Cathedral than staying at the Lodge. It is within the Cathedral grounds, views of the Cathedral right outside your window, and with comfortable albeit small-ish hotel/conference center rooms. You'd be lucky to get a parking space right at the lodge; otherwise, there are car parks 5 - 10 minutes away. The lodge truly is a conference center. The day we were there the Archbishop of Canterbury walked by us for a coffee gathering in the lodge library. You can walk the lodge grounds day or night, the outstanding Cathedral giftshop is just steps away (but does not allow re-entry back into the Cathedral grounds -- you have to come back in through an official grounds entrance), and the wonderful town is just two minutes' walk away (loaded with pedestrian-only streets, shops, restaurants, hotels, etc. The staff at the lodge is very helpful and friendly. It is a comfortable, modern, modest-sized conference center with such close proximity to the Cathedral, is THE place to stay in Canterbury. Plus, being inside the Cathedral "Close" it is very quiet at night and great for sleeping. Excellent breakfast, too.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Cathedral. Also, if there is a conference event, such as "The Gathering" in Sept., you may see the Archbishop of Canterbury there.
