“Unusual, charming and fun”
Reviewed 13 October 2013

There is something rather fun about being a resident of the Cathedral Close after the gates have closed and the tourists have left. The Lodge is attached to a new conference centre and I can imagine it gets very full when events are being held. In August, however, it was quiet without being empty and provided a very enjoyable stay.

The room was large, well-furnished and comfortable, albeit up two flights of stairs in a separate, older building. The reception staff were very welcoming, explained the slightly complicated parking and entry arrangements clearly and provided a leaflet giving discounts at several nearby cafes and restaurants.

Breakfast was good and the waiting staff were friendly. We were even able to eat outside on the terrace (not a frequent occurrence in England!). We will certainly stay again next time we visit East Kent.

Room Tip: Rooms in the new building are more accessible than those in the old.

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks for taking the time to review your recent stay with us - such a wonderful title for your post!

You are quite correct that in addition to our hotel we also offer conference & events facilities, all of which are located within the peaceful precincts of Canterbury Cathedral, so it is wonderful to find that you were able to enjoy this setting.

We look forward to seeing you again when you return to Canterbury.

Kind regards

Joanne Thompson

We had a lovely city break in this hotel, a spacious and comfortable room, in an unusual building right in the Cathedral Close. Breakfast was excellent and freshly cooked, entrance to the Cathedral was included in the price, which was an added bonus. Access to the Cathedral Close after hours felt very special, and gave us the chance to enjoy the building in peace. We were struck by how quiet it was once we got inside the gates on the Saturday night, since outside in the cit it was a lively Saturday night. Recommended for couples.

Like other reviewers we found the rooms and beds small. This did not matter as everything else was perfect. The location is wonderful, very quiet you can enjoy the Cathedral and its grounds as the Hotel gives you a free pass. At night the Cathedral is floodlit, quite beautiful. The staff are helpful and friendly and breakfast was excellent with quick and efficient service. We hope to return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor with a Cathedral view.

Stayed here one Sunday night for an anniversary celebration. The room rate includes entry to the Catherdral which is totally breathtaking and a must....
Can't speak highly enough, room was lovely, clean and overlooking the Catherdral, the gardens are beautiful, really peaceful as you'd imagine, it's a place where you can just sit back and listen to the birds and if you are lucky enough choir singing taking place in the Catherdral itself! Staff can't do enough for you, they booked us a table at Deesons (great food) and followed that by offering us a 10% discount voucher to take along. We ordered a bottle of red wine from our room which was reasonably priced and very good quality....Breakfast is amazing, every choice you could imagine in a lovely bright and airy room....just perfect
All in all we had a wonderful time and would return without a seconds thought.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bay window

The Cathedral Lodge is in an incredible location right within the secured Cathedral Grounds. We had a wonderful view of the Cathedral from our room. The hotel staff were very friendly and the breakfast was excellent. It was a great place to stay for an evening. However, it is very basic and the rooms are small with small beds.

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks for posting a review and we are delighted that you enjoyed your recent stay with us.

We have recently extended our breakfast offering, so it is wonderful to receive positive feedback about this! Our bedrooms are simply furnished with standard sized beds, however we would hope that you agree this has been done to a high standard, with the highlight being the fabulous view of Canterbury Cathedral from the window!

Kind regards

The problem with good properties is that by the time you stay there because you picked it from TA there is very little that remains to be said. The lodge at Canterbury Cathedral is just such a place. Rooms a lovely and how can you complain when you pull the curtains back and you have such a great view (see images). The precinct is closed at night but you have a security pass and there is 24 hour access if you need it. The breakfast is served in the Refectory dining room and offered plenty of choices. This is a great place to base yourself for a few days around Canterbury. Onsite parking is available for 5 pounds/day which is ridiculously cheap by UK standards. You also get unlimited admission to the Cathedral included in your package. We made use of this bonus and visited straight after breakfast, it's a rare treat to be in such a building with so few people. The staff are very helpful and friendly and that is everyone you meet not just the reception staff the security / car parking guys were great. As someone else mentioned if you are parking on site the entrance is well hidden it's in Burgate Street and is an alley on the right hand side between a pub and a building with a red cross on it. That was what we were told and it's spot on ! (Good luck finding it :)

This is a very special place. The hotel staff could not have been more cheerful or helpful. The rooms are simple but beautifully fitted out; the use of wood is lovely. The rooms have wonderful views of the cathedral. Being located within the cathedral precinct gives the ideal combination of an extremely peaceful setting whilst also being in the heart of the city.
