“Pilgrims' Rest”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

As a corollary to any reviews of Canterbury Cathedral itself, I thought I would add a review to one of its 'best kept secrets', that the cathedral has its own class accommodation, located in a private Courtyard within the precincts.

Built originally as accommodation for Anglican bishops, from around the world, coming for conferences and the like, 'The Lodge' is now open for any visitor. It offers in total 35 excellent double rooms 'en-suite', 29 of these in the main block with a superb view of the cathedral, mostly doubles, (standard bed size) with some twins. 6 more are located adjacent, newly refurbished, some with cathedral view and some not. There is also, here, a two bedroom family facility.

All accommodation is offered at B & B tariff (full English breakfast served in Refectory Restaurant). Rates are per room and vary between (2014) £85 and £132, with a £10 reduction for single occupancy. (The rates in the adjacent 'annex' are lower) Tariffs vary according to season and to occupancy levels.

Rooms are equipped with flat screen TVs/Freeview, direct dial telephones, tea/coffee making facilities, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Pre-booked (safe) parking within the precincts is available at £5 per night. (Or otherwise Council parking permits cost £6 per day.) It is a completely non-smoking establishment. The Lodge also caters for functions. A precincts pass allows one to come and go at will.

Adjacent is a lovely 'Campanile' garden in which to sit out and take a drink. There is also a guest library and lounge. The place overall has a wonderful location, ambience and a welcome to match.

Room Tip: The main 29 rooms are all much the same, facing into the courtyard, and towards the cathedral south...

I opted to book a standard double room at the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge and was really excited to spend the weekend in the town and see if the hotel lived up to its reviews.

On entering the hotel I was really impressed. It is lovely and right opposite the cathedral. The people on the reception desk are all really polite and helpful which was good.

We were then shown to our room which was in a block outside the main hotel. The room was as you would expect, standard with wash facilities etc. It was very modern and comfy.

The reason I rated this hotel as average was because I had to put tissue in my ears at night so that I could sleep. Canterbury people seem to like to party which is great, but I could hear everything everyone was saying outside on the street as if they were in the bathroom. I had to close the window at one point to soften the noise, which helped a little but then the room got so hot it was difficult to sleep.

I finally managed to sleep when our next door neighbours woke me up with their friends knocking and talking at the door at 7am. The doors are very thin so you can hear everything.

I would say if you are coming to Canterbury, stay in this hotel but ask for a room which is quiet and off the street so that you get some sleep.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. It is lovely to read that you found our staff to be welcoming and that you enjoyed our location.

I am however sorry to hear that your sleep was disturbed whilst staying in our value annexe. One side of this building does indeed overlook Burgate (street), and I am sorry to hear that you were disturbed by noise from the City on this occasion.

We do hope that you are able to return again, and if you do so please request a room in the main Lodge at the time of booking – all rooms here overlook the Cathedral and are situated within the private Precincts.

Kind regards

We loved our short stay at the Cathedral Lodge. Views of the Cathedral from the bedroom were amazing, staff very friendly and welcoming and breakfast in the morning was of a very high quality. My wife is not a great sleeper, so a comfortable bed and the quietness at night was a added bonus. However just minutes from the Cathedral grounds is the hustle and bustle of Canterbury. Fabulous location, would highly recommend!

We look forward to staying again in the summer.

We stayed two nights at the Lodge and were very pleased that we had found such a serene, quiet spot, within the cathedral grounds and overlooking the cathedral itself. Not too many places left in our busy world like this. Very comfortable bed and en suite. Pre-ordered a bottle of wine which was in the room waiting for us, a very nice touch after negotiating the pace of the M25, M20 and the streets of Canterbury. A tip for first timers here - make sure that you know how to find the entrance to the grounds before embarking on your journey, and I would advise arriving in daylight to help that process. Rooms were very quiet looking over the lodge's courtyard. Breakfast cooked to order was excellent, both in choice and service.

Room Tip: Make sure that your room looks over the lodge's courtyard.

The Lodge is built within the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral. It is modern yet blends very well with its historic surroundings. The bedrooms are well fitted and comfortable and the breakfast menu good with choices of continental breakfast or traditional English.

The Cathedral Lodge is fantastic for your short trip to Canterbury.

The rooms are not big, but nicly decorated, very clean, practical and - despite the fact we had a room close to the reception - surprisingly quiet. The staff is friendly and helpful, the breakfast freshly made - with more than the usual choices of an english breakfast.

And on top of this you get the best location you can have in Canterbury, right on the cathedral grounds! This means not only that you are in the heart of Canterbury and close (50 yards) to the biggest attraction of the city, but also that the entrance to the cathedral is included in your room price and that you can enter the cathedral grounds at night, after it is closed for the public. This means you can walk the wonderfully lighted cathedral grounds almost alone - and this is simply an incredible experience.

And try to get a cheap (5£ a day) parking space from the lodge. They are limited and therefore need to be reserved, but than you can park your car direct beside the cathedral - which makes a lovely picture.
