“Great Charm”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

I have read the other reviews with interest. I was meant to be staying at a more expensive (branded) hotel around he corner, but as I had left it late I couldn't get in. In place I booked into the Sun Hotel on a Wednesday evening in late July and was far from disappointed. Whilst it was quiet, I found the owner both friendly and informative for my needs. I stayed in the "Dickens Room". I got what you would expect for a building dating to 1503. It's quirky and stacked full of charm. If you want a room with square walls, all mod cons and "your bathroom on the right" go else where. If you want charm, history and room that is "fitting" to the age of the building slap bang in the middle of a city dating back over a millennia, then this ticks the boxes. I also had a great breakfast the next morning. All in all, my experience was one of good value, good service and respect for the rooms.

Room Tip: Go for the "Dickens" room. Nice four poster!

We booked this hotel as a last-minute treat for ourselves and my in-laws. The day before arriving, my mother-in-law was taken ill and couldn't possibly come. I phoned to inform the hotel, and spoke to someone so vague I don't think he understood what I said. He didn't even ask for my information. Upon arriving we discovered that the message about the cancelled rooms had not been passed on, so we booked in to both.

The reception was a tip - papers, receipts and files strewn everywhere. Not what I expect from a hotel charging £175 a night.

The television in the rooms (one of which didn't work) was confusing - a myriad of porn channels to choose from, but if you didn't fancy that, there was only E4+1, Sky News or Challenge to choose from.

The wireless service was barely there - the staff didn't seem to know how it worked, and we ended up leeching off nearby Costa's instead.

The bed in Dickens was beautiful, but certainly not worth £175. The TVs were cheap, the walls were decorated with bad art from Wilkinsons, the furniture a mish-mash.

The breakfast was horrendous. As a vegetarian, I asked what my options were. I was given a full English without the meat - undercooked egg (I asked for it well done. When it was taken away to be re-cooked to how I requested, I heard the distinctive ping of a microwave), stodgy beans, nearly raw mushroom and a tomato fresh out of the fridge - they hadn't even tried to cook it. I also got 8 - yes, EIGHT - slices of toast. Most of it went un-eaten as it was so disgusting.

We asked to leave our bags during the day on Sunday, and we were told that we had to pick them up at 3 as the hotel closes every Sunday. I cannot comprehend a hotel that charges this much money that does not employ staff during the day, every day, to help with customer queries! We picked them up at 12.45, and were left waiting over 10 minutes to be let in by the wandering receptionist.

At no point over the weekend did I feel that I was understood, or listened to, by any member of staff. Requests were met with shrugs, questions were met with silence. The cost of this hotel is horrendous, and you get *nothing* for your money - no level of service, inedible food, and barely adequate rooms. The only benefit of this place is the location, but for half the price save yourself the stress and stay in the Cathedral Gate Hotel, which is literally right outside the cathedral.

We did not have a good experience at The Sun. Our room was crapped, dated and dirty. Filthy toilet, stains and dirt on childrens duvet and tea spillage left for us to mop up on top of fridge. We were there 10mins and then left and explained we could not stay in the room. We ended up staying at the best western in Dover 20muns away, which was beautiful and half the price! The Sun is in a brilliant location but that is the only positive comment i can make!

Great location and great building, so what is wrong?

Inside the furniture and decor is not in keeping with the style and age of the building.

All thought-out the building, it's old, it's new it's the wrong period, shame as this place could be fantastic.

The bathrooms are all very nice.

It's quite expensive for what you get, but the location is perfect.

No parking available, so you'll have to park in one of the public car parks

Room Tip: many fourposter rooms, but you'l have to pay for them. The room in the loft is the quietest...

The Sun Hotel is right in the heart of Canterbury close to the Cathedral. The rooms are very comfortable (we were in the Cathedral room) and well decorated. The hotel although hundreds of years old has been renovated beautifully. The beds are very comfortable and bathroom spotless and very well presented. The breakfast is filling and very nice. A great start for the day.
If you are in Canterbury for a short break and drove you can park in a small car park at the end of the High street near the "west gate". You pay £1.10 per hour but only until 9 pm & then it is free until 7am next morning however depending on when you arrive you can pay up to 12 hours so you don't have to get up early to add more money. credit cards are accepted and then the walk to the hotel is very short. The only downside is the noise at night. There were a number of bucks and hens nights and the noise from the surrounding streets and pubs was very loud. However after about midnight it was relatively quiet. Double glazing may help. The price is expensive but for a short stay overall it was worth it.

This is a gorgeous quirky building in the centre of Catnerbury and is full of olde worlde charm and character.

We stayed in the Chaucer room. It was spotless (and believe me I am fussy) the bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom was beautiful. The lack of big windows (small skylights only) and its location in the attic, meant that none of the streets noises from the noisy Friday/Saturday student party crowd, made it up to us and we had a really quite relaxing stay.
Contrary to KatyCLondon, we had a wonderful stay and no complaints.

We always carry our own toiletries so did not need the radox or washngo provided in the bathroom and we had plenty of fluffy towels. Andrew did leave his phone number in case we had any concerns but we didn't need it.

Breakfast was huge and cooked to perfection, and nothing was too much trouble.

We would definitely stay here again

I really could not recommend this hotel to anyone. Despite it being a very good location (its only redeeming feature) everything else was poor. The cost for the room was astronomical, we were in the Chaucer room (I think) which was a mish mash of furniture despite being labelled as a suite, there were no towels in our room when we arrived and the only product in the bathroom was a half used bottle of imperial leather. The carpet was stained and the sheets also stained. The water was so hot I burnt my hand and the only windows were tiny sky lights. Breakfast was good, though we had to send the coffee back as it was literally cold. When we complained to management (the manager was supposed to see us the night before but didn't, and was covered in food with unbuttoned shirt) and were basically told we were wrong which was the icing on the cake. It may have just been we had a bad room, but the cost for what we had was completely disproportionate. If you want a romantic break I would not recommend it.

Room Tip: Don't choose Chaucer.
