We have been using this guesthouse on our trips to an from France for some time now and have never been disappointed. The beds are very comfortable, the decor pleasant and the welcome warm. There are some nice pubs to eat at nearby and despite being near the centre of Dover, River has it's own character and villagey feel. Breakfast at Gary's is always excellent, with just about everything you could possibly want on offer. All in all, highly recommended.

An excellent place to stay when visiting or passing through. We stayed 2 nights whilst we explored the castle and surrounding area and could not fault the hospitality, food or accommodation. In fact the choice and quality of breakfast put our recent stay in a 4* London hotel to shame! Gary has a wonderful business here and we are certainly going to return, however we are gutted he is already fully booked for our next required dates and return to the castle with the kids. Thoroughly recommend this guest house.

Room Tip: The "Raspberry" room has fantastic views across the garden and the valley beyond.

Three very weary people (two from Lancs and one from Devon) started and ended our Christmas holiday on the Rhine at lovely, comfortable and warm Crabble Hill House. Got lost in the one way system and the dark but with a call to Gary soon found the 'River Road'. Couldn't have wished for better and what a breakfast, great start to the day!

We arrived tired after a day at work, awful family news, and with two dogs in tow, but Gary made us feel very welcome and put us at ease immediately. To begin with the reception area is brilliant - large and spacey - not how it would seem from the outside somehow. He gave us a quick tour around and showed us to our enormous room. I fell in love with it straight away and from the way the dogs settled down they obviously also liked it! Gary was happy for us to bring back a take-away meal (we didn't want to leave the dogs too long so didn't want to eat out) so we took a stroll in the cold (it was December) to the Chinese - I'd recommend this too. Apparently in the other direction there is a pub that also serves food that you can take dogs in, so that's worth knowing. He didn't mind letting the dogs run around the back garden, and it is secure so they didn't escape, but by this time it was pitch black and we had difficulty finding them again!
I loved every quirky little thing about this hotel and would definitely recommend you try it for yourselves. Breakfast is plentiful and varied too.

Room Tip: The hotel is in River - the top end of the road and is set back a bit so you need to look carefully...

We had travelled from the West Country to Dover, a journey of over 7 hours. On our arrival we got lost in the Dover one way system. A quick phone call to the owner, Gary. And we were well on our way. On arrival we were met by the aforementioned Gary. Who directed us to the parking area. (Huge and in front of the guest house)(With additional free parking in the road)We were a party of 2. Myself and my adult Son. We had the mulberry room on the fist floor. A twin bedded room. With a fantastic en-suite shower room. I have seen some bathrooms that are smaller that the shower cubicle. Complimentary "smellies", an electric shaving point and additional heating made up the bathroom. The bedroom. As I have said contained 2 single beds. A flat screen tv and tea making equipment. Gary pointed out that if we needed more supplies. They were readily available in the downstairs dinning room. The view out of the bedroom window was stunning. Down over a well maintained and well stocked garden to a belt of trees and the village of River. Breathtaking. The morning brought us to breakfast. The menu was extensive. Fruit juice. Toast Tea Coffee. Full English Eggs, different styles, poached, fried, boiled. Salmon and scrambled eggs. Porridge. The list went on and on. We opted for the full English. Which was cooked and served. It was enough to see us through most of the day (On our trip to France) We found Gary to be the ideal host. And will not hesitate to 1. return. 2. Recommend.

We spent one night (October 5, 2013) at Crabble Hill Guest House, arriving relatively late at about 10pm in the evening prior to taking the ferry to Calais the next day. Gary, the owner, was very friendly and welcoming, the house charming, and the room sumptuous, comfortable, and well appointed with TV, wifi access, provisions for making coffee/tea in the room. Breakfast the following day was very generous and well-cooked -- there was a full English or continental option, fresh fruit, cereals and, of course coffee or tea. There was plenty of parking either in the street off-street in the driveway, and it was a very few minutes to the ferry terminal. It was brilliant for our needs and it would make a lovely place to stay for a longer trip exploring Dover and its environs. We shall certainly return to the area and, when we do, see no point in looking for anywhere else to stay. A lovely place.
