“Great Place”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We stayed one night here on our way back from Calais. It is a lovely building and our room was very spacious and well equipped with stunning views over the garden and valley. We had a large bathroom and tea and coffee facilities, including biscuits. Gary was very friendly and helpful, advising us where to go for dinner and gave information on the bus routes and places to see. The breakfast was excellent - freshly cooked full English if you wanted it (which we did!). There was also a great variety of cold food on offer. We had a bit of trouble finding it, mainly because we hadn't realised there is a village called "River" and there is a "London Road Dover" and a "London Road River" which is different. The house is on a busy road but noise wasn't a problem. For dinner we just walked down the road to the local pub which had "Curry and Quiz" night on a Tuesday which we enjoyed - then got the bus back. Would recommend Crabble Hill House to anyone.

Met by Gary and were immediately impressed by his friendliness and the lovely home he is sharing. The rooms vary from smaller to spacious but all are equally fully equipped and comfortable. The breakfasts are full of variety from fresh fruit to full breakfasts perfectly cooked. He also had lots of good advise on what to see and where to eat and this made the stay a lot more fun and successful. The B&B is perfectly positioned to get to all of the Dover / Kent area and parking is a breeze with a good variety of food a walk away or a 10min drive to get a little further afield. While the road out the front is busy, noise is not an issue. Excellent B&B with an excellent host.

This is a lovely older home with pretty stained glass windows, hanging flower baskets outside, decorated in Art Deco style with a huge beautiful backyard. Gary is very friendly and helpful, and our room was large and comfortable and well supplied. The bathroom is large and the shower was really good. The property is very quiet. Breakfast was exceptionally good, eaten at a big bay window overlooking the garden, valley, and hills. Make sure you get good directions from Gary before you go. We arrived late after a grueling day and couldn't find it. We stopped and asked two people and they sent us to the wrong place. Finally we stopped at another B&B to ask. She said she's asked on a regular basis how to get to Crabble Hill House. It's higher up the road than expected and the small sign is very faded and hard to read. Other than that, this is a great place to stay.

We have been using this guesthouse on our trips to an from France for some time now and have never been disappointed. The beds are very comfortable, the decor pleasant and the welcome warm. There are some nice pubs to eat at nearby and despite being near the centre of Dover, River has it's own character and villagey feel. Breakfast at Gary's is always excellent, with just about everything you could possibly want on offer. All in all, highly recommended.

An excellent place to stay when visiting or passing through. We stayed 2 nights whilst we explored the castle and surrounding area and could not fault the hospitality, food or accommodation. In fact the choice and quality of breakfast put our recent stay in a 4* London hotel to shame! Gary has a wonderful business here and we are certainly going to return, however we are gutted he is already fully booked for our next required dates and return to the castle with the kids. Thoroughly recommend this guest house.

Room Tip: The "Raspberry" room has fantastic views across the garden and the valley beyond.

Three very weary people (two from Lancs and one from Devon) started and ended our Christmas holiday on the Rhine at lovely, comfortable and warm Crabble Hill House. Got lost in the one way system and the dark but with a call to Gary soon found the 'River Road'. Couldn't have wished for better and what a breakfast, great start to the day!

We arrived tired after a day at work, awful family news, and with two dogs in tow, but Gary made us feel very welcome and put us at ease immediately. To begin with the reception area is brilliant - large and spacey - not how it would seem from the outside somehow. He gave us a quick tour around and showed us to our enormous room. I fell in love with it straight away and from the way the dogs settled down they obviously also liked it! Gary was happy for us to bring back a take-away meal (we didn't want to leave the dogs too long so didn't want to eat out) so we took a stroll in the cold (it was December) to the Chinese - I'd recommend this too. Apparently in the other direction there is a pub that also serves food that you can take dogs in, so that's worth knowing. He didn't mind letting the dogs run around the back garden, and it is secure so they didn't escape, but by this time it was pitch black and we had difficulty finding them again!
I loved every quirky little thing about this hotel and would definitely recommend you try it for yourselves. Breakfast is plentiful and varied too.

Room Tip: The hotel is in River - the top end of the road and is set back a bit so you need to look carefully...
