This is not a pub. There is no real beer. We booked one of the cottages which turned out to be too far away to walk to the main place where we had the tasting menu. We asked (not volunteered) for transport to & from the restaurant which was granted. The evening couldn't be faulted. Service was perfectly paced, wine pairings were complementary to the lovely food. The sommelier should learn to relax---he knows his stuff, be cool.
My wife loved it all. I thought the shower should be larger,

Thank you for taking time to write a report of your stay here with us at the Marquis.

We are glad you enjoyed your evening.

Although the Marquis was built as a pub we have now refurbished to a restaurant with rooms.

Although our on tap cider & ale are locally sourced we do also sell a range of bottled beers.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Kind regards

Abbi Holley

When does a B&B become a 'boutique hotel'?

Leaving aside the number of rooms, which does tip the Marquis into the hotel category, the answer is, I think, the facilities.
So, nice designer coffee , Nespresso machine, good, tubs of long-life milk bad.
Modern art and lots of cushions good, badly stained carpet and table tops, bad.

We ended up in the De Panier room, which would be good for a long stya, but was probably a bit much for one night, with a large sitting room we didn't use.

There is also an unnecessarily low doorway, which caught both of us and which should be fixed or padded if not.

Bed was large and very comfortable.

I would echo other comments about checking exactly what you have bought, as full breakfasts are not available for everyone. Breakfast for us was a continental buffet, which was fine,a though the coffee was controlled by waiters.

Room Tip: Check your package and get everything in writing beforehand

Thank you for taking the time to review The Marquis.

We have taken on board your comments. All of our packages do now include a full English breakfast.

In light of the milk portions there is always an option to request fresh milk brought up to your room with a simple call to reception.

The low doorways are the way the building was built and are all clearly labelled with 'mind your head' signs.

We were aware of the coffee stains in De Pamier and have now had the furniture re-polished and glassed over to prevent this happening again, the carpet stains have also been covered.

Kind Regards

I have just returned from a wonderful overnight stay at The Marquis. The stay was a birthday treat from my partner and lived up to expectations. We stayed in the Nailbourne room on the ground floor, it was decorated beautifully and well equipped for an over night stay. The staff were excellent and quick to respond to our needs such as wanting fresh milk in our room for coffee.

We started our evening in the bar with a cocktail and were then seated in the restaurant. The champagne cocktail was excellent and my partner enjoyed his local lager (Chapeldown). The meal started with canapes and an amuse bouche which was a nice surprise. The bread was lovely, especially the onion bread. The food was excellent, we had the four course tasting menu. I enjoyed all the courses and would struggle to pick just one highlight. All staff were friendly and warm and added to our wonderful experience.

This was our first visit to The Marquis but I look forward to finding another special occassion as an excuse to return!

The Marquis is a well presented "boutique" hotel which prides itself on the restaurant. The food is very good and well presented, although if on a "deal" make sure the waiters are aware of the deal you are on.
The bedroom we stayed in was comfortable and well appointed although you could not open the windows for fresh air. Bathroom needed a bit of TLC with blown bulbs and fittings hanging out of the ceiling.
Overall a nice getaway, a bit pricey if you are not on a special deal.
No chance of a mobile phone signal.

Together with two other couples we have a weekend away early each year and this year we tried this interesting hotel. From the outside it looks fairly unexciting, and we drove past it once missing it completely, but once inside it's a lovely hotel. We booked a superior room and had a wide bed with plenty of cushions, a lounge area, a huge adjustable TV and a luxury bathroom with a big, deep bath. Each room comes with a dog soft toy which you put outside your door to show when you're in! Highly recommended. The restaurant is also very good and I have reviewed that separately.

Not much competition in this area and hard to find if not local, although it is on the main Alkham road. Access to car park a nightmare in snow as very steep and cambered so don't bring a big car. Welcome and ambiance very good and room had some great personal touches. We found a good offer and had champagne on arrival although our room was the most basic and wasn't as spacious as the other rooms by the sound of it. Offer included 6 taster menu + wines. Each wine was explained but often food arrived in mid speech so no info on the food which was disappointing. Food very good without being spectacular but real treat was breakfast. When you can choose between different types of bacon, you know you're on to a good thing!
So overall a good venue in a barren area but try to find package offers to make your stay more realistically priced

Room Tip: For views & space avoid the cheapest rooms

Having been here before, we experienced the gastronomic 6 course with wines menu. The flavours and choice of ingredients impressed us beyond belief. The room we stayed in had the comfiest bed and we were glad we could drag ourselves to bed after such a lovely feast. The service is exceptional from every member of the team. I cannot recall a better meal in Kent, it beats Michael Caine on Canterbury and the Hengist/The Swan in Maidstone. It rivals many central london restaurants where you'd expect to pay more. Well done, we are now looking forward to the breakfast!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Come on in. Take a look around. You might just be surprised. For while the Alkham Valley, indeed Alkham village itself, suggests genteel old England at its most rural and unspoiled, the Marquis itself is something else... It's a strikingly contemporary restaurant and hotel. The product of a major renovation in 2008, what was once the village's pub, The Marquis of Granby, has been utterly transformed. Space, light, fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics and the opportunity to fine tune every detail hasn't been missed. The restaurant is a revelation. Head Chef Andrew King's seasonally inspired and locally sourced menus are as fresh as they are imaginative, and the elegant 21st century styling is exceptional. Queen sized pocket sprung beds are swathed in the finest cotton. Sumptuous fabrics dress windows and chairs. And an eclectic collection of art completes the mood, the mix and the personality that makes this place unique. Boutique chic in the heart of the English countryside? You've found it. You've arrived. ... more   less
