Very warm welcome , great service and well appointed room at the back of the hotel . we opted to upgrade for the taster menu which was excellent and accompanied by a good wine list.

The marquis of course is not a cheap weekend , but then thats not the target market . This is fine dining . There are some beautiful walks close by and we plan to go back once the weather warms up !

Room Tip: from reviews a room at the back of the hotel is the best bet

We stayed at The Marquis on 20th December , on arrival we were upgraded to the De Pamier Suite . It has a massive bedroom with separate lounge and bathroom , which was amazing !
We had a four course set menu but we upgraded to the 6 course taster menu . Just before dinner we received a complementary glass of sparkling wine and nibbles . The dinner was one of the best meals we have ever had we especially liked the dexter beef and the Christmas pudding soufflé. The wine list was extensive and the staff friendly and very attentive.
We also had the pleasure to meet the head chef Charles Lakin and my husband even got of photo together. It was all together a very enjoyable stay and we would love to return again.

The entire stay was amazing, I could'nt fault anything. We stayed in the Wolverton, our room was fantastic. The decor is modern but not over the top, the vertical window is amazing and you can just lay there watching the stars. All the staff made us feel very welcoming and made are stay even more speical, they were friendly and very helpful with the food and wine choices. The food is defiantly worth it's 5 stars (I couldn't stop thinking about it when I was at home haha). The whole stay from the room to the restaurant food is great value money. I've stayed in some hotels in London/Kent and The Marquis at Alkham out shines them all. I would 100% stay here again and would encourage anyone thinking of doing so.

The hotel is clean, bright and modern. Our room, Wolverton, was comfortable, spacious and relaxing with everything you need available. For the first time in ages I actually put clothes in drawers because (unusually for an hotel) they were clean. We had the Taste of Kent menu for dinner and as I do not eat meat the chef made some very nice fish and vegetable options for me. Both of our meals were delicious and the service was excellent. The staff looked after us very well and all were very friendly.

Can't fault this hotel and restaurant. Rooms were superb and individually docorated, we stayed in the superior room and will definitely be returning. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The nespresso machine in the room was a lovely touch. Restaurant food was very worthy of its five stars, using local produce and great value for money.

We had a great time here the staff were very attentive the food was absolutly lovely, the room was nice, the only thing i would say was that the room was far too hot during the nigh which made it quite uncomfortable to sleep, but overall was a fantastic stay.

We stayed here for one night,we were shown to our room which in all fairness was decorated to nice standard even though the room was on the small side. The road noise was very apparent but we were assured this would subside & would not be a problem. At about am we were woken by the flow of traffic which increased as the morning went on so not a very good nights sleep. With this in mind I would recommend you book a room to the rear of hotel. We did mention this but felt side stepped by the owner.
We ate in the Restaurant which in fairness my husband enjoyed but I would advise if you have any specific dietary requirements to phone in advance as this could prove a problem on the night as the owner/manager made a rather exaggerated comment that he would have to consult first with the chef & that often this would cause a problem!!!
The staff were exceptional and very friendly which did go some way to improving our stay.
As we were leaving early we asked if we could have breakfast to go which we ordered at check in but much to our disappointment it was awful & unable to eat.
We compare our review of this hotel to others we have stayed in at a similar price & rating & found it overpriced in comparison.

Room Tip: Ask for a room to the rear of hotel as there is road noise to the front.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Come on in. Take a look around. You might just be surprised. For while the Alkham Valley, indeed Alkham village itself, suggests genteel old England at its most rural and unspoiled, the Marquis itself is something else... It's a strikingly contemporary restaurant and hotel. The product of a major renovation in 2008, what was once the village's pub, The Marquis of Granby, has been utterly transformed. Space, light, fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics and the opportunity to fine tune every detail hasn't been missed. The restaurant is a revelation. Head Chef Andrew King's seasonally inspired and locally sourced menus are as fresh as they are imaginative, and the elegant 21st century styling is exceptional. Queen sized pocket sprung beds are swathed in the finest cotton. Sumptuous fabrics dress windows and chairs. And an eclectic collection of art completes the mood, the mix and the personality that makes this place unique. Boutique chic in the heart of the English countryside? You've found it. You've arrived. ... more   less
