This place is the best place we have even been.

The views, the facilities and the peace.

Apart from internet access and sky TV all mod cons are included. A dishwasher and a washer/dryer. Wow.

Heaven!

We really did not want to leave!!!!

Hubby and I went to England to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and wanted to find a special place to stay. English Heritage has quite a few different properties that can be booked, including the one we chose - Peverell's Tower on the grounds of Dover Castle. The building was constructed around 1200 as a gate for the castle (at that time the castle grounds were not as extensive), and since then it has served many purposes including as a prison. It has modern and clean furnishings, although both my husband and myself found the sofa uncomfortable. There's a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom, with a funny, cramped little stairs that goes up to the roof for even more spectacular views. The castle grounds are very quiet (quite spooky) after it closes to regular visitors at 6 pm. Tower guests are allowed to wander the property at will, although the main buildings are locked. There's still a lot to see, and it's really neat to be there when no one else is around (aside from a few security people).

Please note - this is not the place for people with mobility problems! The bathroom was about 10 steps up from ground level, with another ten curving steps before you got to the main living level. The roof access is through a tiny door, up very steep, curving steps, and out through another tiny door. We foolishly chose not to rent a car (chicken americans) and ended up walking more than we ever have in our lives. The taxi drivers all thought they'd be denied access to the grounds, so would let us off about 1/2 mile (of uphill walking) from the Tower. We later found out that they would have been allowed on the property - wish we had known that earlier.

There is also a 19th century house on the castle grounds that can be rented, which is much bigger (3 bedrooms and loads of living space). They don't get the wonderful views since it's tucked in below Peverell's Tower, although they also can wander around in the peace and quiet at will.

If you like to walk and don't mind stairs, this is a beautiful, peaceful place for a holiday. Even so, you'd want a car - it's about 1.5 miles (downhill) to get to a restaurant that's open in the evenings... and then you've got an uphill journey to get home!

The location of this superb accommodation is unbeatable and for a truly panoramic view guests can enjoy the private roof terrace. Built high within the walls of Dover Castle this 13th century Tower is as rich in character as it is in history. Named after William de Peverell, this tower has been witness to many key events that have shaped England's History. This medieval fortress was built by Henry II and its Great Tower served as a royal palace for the Plantagenet kings. Climb the winding stairway to discover the beautifully converted holiday accommodation where many of the original features have been retained including some graffiti scrawled by a former occupant thought by many to be a 16th century prisoner. ... more   less
