My husband and I also visited The White Horse on the evening of Monday 17th October. We had enjoyed drinks there on a previous visit and read the reviews here. We decided to eat and ordered fish and chips. This turned up pretty quickly but the chips/wedges were burnt, peas cold, and the small amount of fish enclosed in the over crispy batter was dry. We did mention to the landlord that we were disappointed, and why. He didn't seem surprised at the quantity of food left on our plates, offered no apology but said he would tell the chef. We got no feedback whatsoever so now suspect that this poor standard is the norm. We will not8 visit there again.

We went to this pub after arriving in a B&B around the corner. After a day on the motorways and another one ahead we (family of three) were looking forward to a nice evening, but sadly our experience wasn't as good as the one of the other reviewers here.

The pub wasn't busy, with only one other table where people had food, but we waited more than 45 mins for what should have been an easy to deliver meal (scampi & chips and gammon) and only got our food after asking at the bar what the delay was about. The chips were overdone and dark brown and the peas cold and if it hadn't been for being so hungry and not wanting to drag a child out into another place this would have been the first place ever I would have walked out (me being the non-confrontational type).
In hindsight we should have inquired earlier, that may have saved the chips at least.

Whatever the reason for our disappointing experience was - going by the other reviews I assume/hope it was one-off misfortune.

Recommended by the owner of the Castle House Bed & Breakfast, just around the corner, that we stayed in for one evening. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere, and good choice of food on the menu, and it was all just what we needed after a long day travelling.

If you want a real local pub, classic surrounds and even cross-channel swimmers' signatures covering all the walls, friendly atmosphere with bar-games and a great selection of ales and beers, and if you want good honest English pub grub, come to the White Horse, I will always recommend it. Not just your average local!

The server here was very friendly and helpful in choosing a local beer. The food was excellent! My husband had a very traditional meal and I had a more contemporary meal and they were both excellent. Tasty and hot. The price was reasonable.
